If your child was on the late side of talking, did they eventually catch up?

FTM who is quite anxious. 18 month old DD isn’t talking. She babbles, and seems to understand everything and points. Can do a few animal sounds. I know people say their child started after 2 and now doesn’t shut up but still feel very nervous. I know I shouldn’t compare but when I hear far younger children talking it definitely worries me.

I just wondered, if your child was on the late side of things or even classed as delayed, did they eventually catch up or have they always been that bit behind?

My daughter is now 28 (years) she didn't speak until 2 years 4 months then came out in sentences and hasn't stopped talking since!!!!

My DC didn't talk much until she was about 18mths to 2yrs. I remember friends kids saying quite a range of words where she didn't. However they weren't as active or walking until well over a yr- 18mths whereas my DC was walking from 9-10mths.

I can't remember when she started talking but she then went pretty much into full sentences.

My son is 2 and a half and still has not a single word, can oink like a pig roar like a dinosaur extremely well, makes his own sounds for car and sirens. I am only posting as my son has been checked over by SALT twice now and they have no concerns they also haven't classed him as delayed as he understands everything and communicates well in other ways. He is not currently receiving any type of therapy to help his speech.

I totally understand where your coming from I too have spent the last year extremely worried about the what ifs but have now decided to embrace his quiet little world until speech comes along, which I'm sure it will.

Good luck :)

Oh god I felt like this.
I started worrying at 15 months and by 18 months every month from there was Infinitely more words, now every thing I say he copies (21months) it felt like it came out of nowhere.

2/4 DC received SLT at age 3-5, none were early talkers, DD was almost unintelligible when she started school.

All 'caught up', as you say. Got good GCSEs, by end of yr1 they were doing well at school. DH was a late talker too.

One of mine didn't have any words until 2ish. By the time he was 3 you wouldn't have known and his great vocabulary was always a feature of his primary school reports.

At 2 years 2 months we had the 2 year check with the HV because I was concerned dtd2 wasn’t talking. We got there dtd1 refused to speak despite usually chatting away and dtd2 said sentences. I swear the HV thought I’d mixed them up as they’re identical. They’re now 10 and no issues. I wouldn’t be at all concerned until 2 and even then I’d not worry too much.
