HELP - Mouth Breathing Toddler

Hi all

Spoken with the GP but not really getting anywhere on this one.

My 2.5 year old breathes through her mouth. When awake, when asleep, all the time. You can feel she is also breathing through her nose too, but her mouth is open and there is definitely breath coming out.

Now I've been advised by some people that this is totally abnormal and after a check of Dr Google, it seems they are right.

We visited the GP today and he has been very dismissive that this will pass with age. Now I'm more than happy for him to be dismissive if it's genuinely not a problem, but other avenues seem to suggest it is an issue.

She snores during naps and night-time. She usually had a runny nose.

Has anyone got any experience of this? I'm trying to play it down, but I am very worried. Any advice or help would be so greatly appreciated. Please.

My little one is 3 exactly the same - constantly snotty nose, snores quite a lot.

I am waiting for a dental appointment at the mo - apparently they can check the structure of the jaw and mouth and advise if any intervention needed - might be worth a shot for you ?

Other issue might be adenoids - that's a gp issue though.

To be fair they do normally grow out of these types of issues - and googling kind of gives you worse case scenario to be fair.

Still give the dentist a try :) feel free to pm me if you like since we have the same issue at the. Same time if I get any info I'll let you know

Oh shit. I think I'm a mouth breather. Never ever knew it was not ok until this post. Not particularly aware of it, I just breathe, but now I've thought about it, I think I always breathe through my mouth. I've just never been able to breathe properly through my nose. I'm 38.

Have you had the tonsils/adenoids checked? My 3yo was a mouth breather and has recently had a tonsillectomy and partial adenoidectomy. Has improved things hugely. No more snoring/noisy breathing known as a stertor and he seems better rested and with more energy

I think tongue tie can be related to this. I wonder if you'd have better luck with a dentist?

It can also be related to enlarged anenoids but I don't know enough to say whether that causes the mouth breathing or is as a result of it.

Definitely push for a second option it's not normal.

Mine was like this, ended up having her adenoids cauterised at age 7, this was at the same time as putting grommets in. Have you noticed any issues with hearing at all?

Meant to say, post surgery mouth breath in g and snoring almost gone entirely

I've realised as an adult I'm a mouth breather. I had my tonsils and adenoids out as a kid and it made no difference. My voice sounds nasally, I have a weak jaw and bad posture although I do have defined cheek bones. I can't change how I breathe. I literally start hyperventilating when I try and nose breathe. It's never been highlighted to me as an issue though, that's just me googling and matching characteristics.

Thank you all so much for your comments. I'm so sorry I haven't responded until now - I had no notifications so thought no one had responded! I'm not really any further forward, other than a bad case of Croup made significantly worse by large Adenoids. The doctor in A&E seemed sympathetic to my concerns having had a son with large Adenoids herself. No luck with the GP still! Although oddly the loud snoring seems to have eased off in the last week or so (after over a year of very loud snoring each night!).
