Weird nappies but baby otherwise well

I’m EBF a 2 month old baby who for the past 2.5 weeks has had green, mucusy poos, a few times with a tiny bit of blood in them. They’re quite frequent and sometimes quite runny. He is otherwise well in himself - sleeps pretty well, smiles, doesn’t cry much, eats well, has wet nappies, gains weight normally.

I of course went to the GP right away. After being told to monitor for a few days with no change, I went back and was told CMPA and advised to cut out dairy, which i have done for the past week.

The things that complicate the situation and make me unsure of the CMPA/allergy diagnosis:

  • I was under the impression with allergies there are more symptoms, like eczema, colic, etc?
  • I was on a course of antivirals for a week 3 weeks ago, the weird poos started a few days into me taking this medication. Which could be a coincidence but I just feel like could also not be? But wouldn’t any irritation they caused go by now?
  • Baby had his Rotavirus vaccine right after my last GP appointment, so the day I started being dairy free. Could this still be effecting his nappies/pooping or not so much a week on?

I know it’s a wait and see at this stage as there’s so many factors but mostly I’m just worried about going on a very restrictive diet that ultimately isn’t necessary and could even be detrimental to me and my baby.

My 11 week old baby has cmpa and I spotted it early as her older brother has it and I didn’t spot it until he was older as he didn’t have a lot of the common symptoms. Both of them have put weight on well and have no skin issues.
To diagnose it properly I was given this advice by the HV. Go strictly dairy free for 3 full weeks to totally eliminate it from your system and theirs. Then have a milk blow out day (yoghurt, milk, cheese etc) and monitor to see if there is a stark contrast in nappies/comfort/other symptoms. For me I only got as far as a single veggie lasagne and the discomfort and nappies were really obvious. The mucous and green had cleared up while I was dairy free but reappeared a few hours after I ate it.
It seems a bit swift to be diagnosing. Also, my GP has referred us to a dietician for support with it too. Not such an enormous issue as we are vegetarian and have been slowly going vegan over a few years, so I’ve already made lots of the dairy free swaps. But if I hadn’t, I’d be feeling quite lost and worried about nutrition.
Good luck with jt and hopefully it’s not CMPA as it’s a pain!

@AutumnVibes thanks for replying, that’s interesting that your children didn’t have the common symptoms - was it just the nappies then? Have you tried reintroducing at all?

Also did you have to restrict anything else? Going dairy free isn’t that big a deal for me but Im worried as when I’ve been reading it looks like a lot of people also give up soya, and eggs - we’re vegetarian so other than dairy those are our big protein sources so that worries me as does the idea of having to cook lots of separate dinners for me and my husband if that’s the case!

I am still keeping fingers crossed that he’s is his intense ones/gut irritated by something and that it will slowly heal and it’s not due to allergies. My family is pretty allergy free but my husband has his share of allergies so I blame him Wink

Hi, we’ve been lucky and haven’t got the soya/other allergies, so only dealing with dairy and being vegetarian. My older one is okay with bits of milk in cheese or as an ingredient, but can’t manage milk, yoghurt, ice cream, custard or chocolate in anything but the tiniest of doses. The littlest one is ultra sensitive, so while I think they may not outgrow it entirely, I think they will get less sensitive as they get older and their guts mature. I could try reintroducing, but tbh, I’m off the mind that it’s more ethical to be dairy free so am just making the best of this to push us in a better direction as a family. Both kids are in the 90th centiles and are growing well on their vegan breastfed diets.

Let us know how you get on.

Both my girls have/had cmpa. For both of them reflux and diahorrea with mucus were their main symptoms. My eldest out grow it at 3.5 yrs, DD at 2 yrs but neither will drink cow’s milk. My youngest also has soya allergy.

As long as you are getting enough calcium, vitamin D and iodine (from some forfeited milk, oatley, asda own oat milk and m and s) then its fine to be dairy free.

With all the other stuff going on it maybe cmpa or it maybe not. You can try dairy and soya free for 3 weeks and then challenge by drinking a big glass of milk and seeing what happens.
