Dropped a bottle onto babys head

Hey, just wanted to ask something.

I was feeding my 3 week old about 7ish and i was checking to see how much milk was in his bottle when i dropped it and it hit him on the head.

The bottle was basically empty and it wasnt that high. He didnt cry at all and let me burp him. He is currently in his crib moving his arms & legs around fine and seems wide awake.

Do you think i need to get him checked? Please be kind, i feel awful already and first time Mum so these things are all new to me.

If he didn’t cry, he probably wasn’t hurt. It doesn’t sound like it was very heavy or hit very hard either. I think it’s probably totally fine. Try dropping the bottle on your own head if you want to test it.

mrscotton · 29/03/2022 08:28

@Mumto7moboy

I’m sure he will be fine. When mine was that little I hit his head on the side of the cot when putting him to bed, he didn’t even wake but I cried as I felt awful. Please don’t be harsh on yourself x
He didnt even make a crying face and was wide awake as he was just having his bottle. Will keep an eye on him. Thank you for your kind words x

He didnt even pull a crying face so hopefully thats a good sign. The bottle had just enough to fill the bit they put in their mouth up so would have been under 10ml. I worry alot so this hasnt helped. My husband said not to worry but i do.

He's fine.
The fact that he's barely reacted means it hasn't hurt.

axolotlfloof · 29/03/2022 08:31

He will be fine. You sound like a lovely Mum.

BingBangB0ng · 29/03/2022 08:31

It’s easy to worry when you’ve got a tiny baby. Honestly though, nothing bad seems to have happened. If you like, treat it as a lesson in being careful when holding things above him. I once narrowly missed dropping my phone on my first baby’s head. I felt awful about it, but I learned to be more careful.

shreddednips · 29/03/2022 08:36

I remember this feeling of worry when you have a tiny baby so clearly. But a nearly-empty milk bottle isn't heavy, and I doubt that it bumped him hard enough to do damage if he didn't cry.

vegisaurus · 29/03/2022 08:40

Please don't feel bad. I know they are so tiny but they are a lot more resilient than you think! With head injuries (and this doesn't sound like one if that helps) doctors only tend to worry if there is loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting or a cut that won't stop bleeding. If they are generally acting normally (after any initial tears of course) then it is fine to monitor them at home. Hope that helps reduce your worry a little bit!

Ostryga · 29/03/2022 08:43

He will be completely fine, promise.

I hit DD’s head off a door frame (not used to carrying babies through doors!) and was hysterical. My lovely mum had to come calm me down. Dd was fine and recovered far quicker than I did!! Those newborn days make everyone a little mad Grin

sixoclockalready · 29/03/2022 08:46

I think we've all been there

I remember when i dropped my phone on baby's head. Scrolling the web whilst feeding

I felt terrible

They're more resilient than you think

Afterallsbeensaidanddone · 29/03/2022 08:52

My doctor told me quite seriously that babies bounce and are built to survive in caves. I don't know quite how accurate that was but I'm positive this is something to take off your worry list.Smile

goldensilver · 29/03/2022 08:57

When I was in the hospital after having my first born, he rolled away from me as I was putting him in the plastic crib and bumped his head on the edge of it. I was beside myself and called a nurse. She checked him over and reassured me that worse things have happened. She told me to think about all the second, third babies who have older siblings whacking them on the head with toys etc 😂
I had never thought of it like that but sure enough, when I had my second I had to relax a lot more!
Your baby will be fine - have a cup of tea and relax knowing that you're a good mum.

I've also done this (more than once 😩)

I did that too! I felt soooo guilty. Baby didn't seem to notice.

OP, don't worry. He'd have cried if it was hard enough to hurt. Flowers

RebeccaCloud9 · 29/03/2022 09:24

Bottle of wine, not good
Milk feeding bottle, fine

AegonT · 29/03/2022 09:25

I dropped a thick paperback book from a high shelf onto my second baby's face. She did cry - thank God it wasn't a hardback! Babies are tougher than they look.

Cyw2018 · 29/03/2022 09:28

My DD was breastfed so never had a bottle dropped on her head, however i dropped my phone on her many times, especially as she got older and would have a tendency to wave her arms around as she was drifting off to sleep, swiping my phone out of my hands.

Ozanj · 29/03/2022 09:31

Lol I dropped my phone on ds’ head when he was 3 hours old. Don’t worry. If he didn’t cry he wasn’t hurt.

mrscotton · 29/03/2022 09:44

Thank you everyone. Luckily never dropped my phone on him so this was the first incident i had.

I worry alot so felt awful when it hit him, rubbed it better straight away but he didnt even flinch.

My husband goes back to work tomorrow for the first time since little man has been born so worrying a bit more than normal.

You probably will and will remember this thread.

It's normal to be a bit anxious first time alone with a new baby. You'll get in your own routine at some point.

More than likely as he does love moving his arms about. My phone is probably heavier than the bottle aswell.

I am hoping so, hope to get out a few days a week depending how he sleeps too.

I was feeding 7 week old DD lay down the other day with my iPad on a pillow watching TV. As I moved the iPad fell forwards and slid off the pillow onto DD's head, she didn't even stir but I felt awful. I've dropped my phone on DS's head too when he was tiny, he's 3 now and I can't tell you the number of times I've accidentally bumped his head on the car getting him in and out as a wriggly toddler. We've all been there, he'll be fine!
