My 10 months baby refuses formula

My baby has been refusing formula and not gaining weight. He is always happy and smiling and rarely cries for food. His length grow has not been affected as well. However, the doctor is worried. Any advice?

At that age he could get the same nutrients through his food. Does he eat well inclusive of dairy products?

sapo2000 · 26/03/2022 15:54

Thanks. He only drinks a bit of pumped milk (mine) and formula

Have you not started weaning yet? He’ll be getting nutrients from his food so I don’t see why the doctor is worried

How much solid food is he eating?

dementedpixie · 26/03/2022 16:46

I was asking if he eats dairy such as cheese, yoghurt, milk in cereal, etc alongside other solid foods. If he is eating other foods then he should get the same nutrients as he would get from formula/breastmilk

Start weaning if you haven't already.

Both of mine really went off milk at this age. Paediatrician (not in the U.K. so standard to see one) said it was fine if they are eating well and weight gain is on track. Their only advice was to do vitamin drops which we used to disguise in yogurt.

Has your doctor said why they’re concerned?

Sorry everyone!!! I meant 10 weeks old!! Not 10 months....sorry

If he refuses formula then can you pump more? Or breastfeed directly? You could also try different formula brands - Aptimil allegedly tastes most like breast milk (not that I've tried it!)

Our youngest did this, though she was entirely formula fed. Dropped from the 75th centile right to the bottom of the charts. Paeds couldn’t find anything ‘wrong’ with her and they were about to suggest tube feeding at one point.

It’s incredibly stressful, but she was exactly the same - happy, smiling and never asking for milk. She’s now almost 8mo and can still go a long time between meals but eats for England. Refuses milk in the day, but will have a very small bedtime bottle and maybe a few oz here and there overnight but that’s it. Adores cheese and yoghurt. I think she’s just a weird baby.

Good luck OP - I was at the end of my tether at around 10-14 weeks. I hope the issue is resolved.

If you've a milk supply then it should be easy to increase and then just exclusively breastfeed.

I tried and he likes it.however it causes lots of gases and then he doesn't eat.

You've tried Aptimil, but it gives him gas?

What about more breastfeeding or pumped milk then? If he's refusing formula then upping your milk supply is probably a good idea.
