Do I need potty training pants?

My 2.5 year old has asked to use the toilet a couple of times at nursery. Never at home, though she sits on her potty and is interested in books on it. I think it’s time I give training a go.

Do I need those expensive potty training pants, as in will it be a nightmare mess otherwise, or are normal pants fine. I also have a 3 month old and already struggle to keep on top of housework, so anything that will make my life easier I’m prepared to fork out for. Hey

We can see this thread is quite old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for guidance, we’ve recently updated our best potty training pants page with plenty of great options rated by Mumsnet parents, plus info on whether they’re right for you. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Normal pants are fine! Or no pants in the garden? (If not overlooked, warm enough etc, just for a couple of days)

My ds LOVES his potty training pants and is determined to keep them dry. He just doesn't have the same respect for ordinary pants. You could possibly choose nicer ordinary pants and get the same effect!

They definitely saved me some washing and carpet cleaning in the early stages.

Our local nappy library does a hire kit of potty training pants which might be cheaper than buying.

Normal pants are fine. We've never used nappy pants apart from at bedtime. Nursery will use them if the children are walking to the park or similar.

I spent a lot on potty training pants and they were hot and uncomfortable.

The childminder actually went out and bought us normal pants from ASDA!

Thank you!

Naked from the waist down is the best, I found :-)

I bought some to hopefully catch any little accidents. They caused more accidents! Too much like a nappy so my daughter just used them like one, which she didn’t with normal pants.

We had a couple of pairs of cloth training pants for long car journeys or other people's houses if they had carpet! Just in case. The rest of the time normal pants with lots of spares (and spare shorts/leggings) were better for learning.
