Does anyone have any experience of doing this or any advice. when ds was 6 months I thought it would be easy, now he's 2 i'm not so sure

yep get a good step stool and a good toilet seat insert or dbl seat with little seat for younger bottoms
None of mine have used a potty...

I did the potty with ds1 and the toilet with ds2 - I would say the toilet was much easier tbh!

woodenchair · 06/01/2008 20:08

Yeah it can be done, I thought it might have been an urban myth!

I like the idea of going straight to the toilet, could you tell me how you did it? I'm feeling a bit overwelmed by the idea of potty training tbh

Decide a day to start - make sure you have no other washing - I would take ds every 1/2 hour so he gets the idea - then the next day - ask him if he needs to go and take it from there. Lots of spare pants, trousers and rewards are needed! oh and patience of course Try to keep it as simple as possible. Also put a pamper dry mat on his car seat/in his pushchair - so you still get to go out. A friend of mine makes hers wear wellies when she potty trains so it doesn;t go all over the floor!

We don't have a potty, just a seat for the toilet & a step so he can climb up by himself and it seems to be working quite well. He's 2.3

MerryPIFFLEmas · 06/01/2008 20:13

I took a very hands off approach... I waited until the kids asked to use the loo. With ds1 it was 2 y 9 mths and dd it was 2y 5mths. Neither had any accidents and were dry during day from day one. Hassle free IMO plus easier to start in spring summer as you can take nappies and trousers off.

When should you start potty training? My DS is 1 - everyone keeps saying 'Oh boys are so much harder to train than girls' (helpful eh?).

(Sorry Woodenchair for hijack)

I;ve done two boys - ds1 was 2.1 and ds2 was 2.5 - ds2 got it much quicker and was dry at night within the week aswell. Ds3 is only 8 months but would wait until he showed some interest (not that ds2 did ) and go straight for the toilet again.

Octo · 06/01/2008 20:17

The only reason I did ds2 was that I had bought a new carpet and wanted him dry before it arrived

woodenchair · 06/01/2008 20:25

hijack away wilkie

Octo, love the idea of the wellies!

ds is 2.4, his childminder is going on holiday next month for 3 weeks and I think I'm going to use the window of oportunity to do it while i have him to myself.

thank you all for the advice, I will probably be back next month!

I've just recently managed to potty train ds1 in one week, he has been dry at night with only one accident in 7 days. He was two and a half in December. The sticker idea in conjunction with chocolate buttons really did the trick
