Windy baby
Sleepyquest · 22/03/2022 10:42
Baby is 5 weeks old and mainly breastfed, although has about 60ml of formula twice a day, around 2pm and 7pm.
She is breastfed in the night. However, this is when she really struggles with trapped wind (farts) she grunts and moans for ages and cannot get the farts out. I've been giving infacol but it doesn't seem to make a difference. She doesn't seem to suffer with the wind during the day. So what do I need to do?! I'm losing so much sleep trying to help her in the early hours to no avail.
Help a tired mama and grumpy baby! Thanks

Unfortunately this is pretty normal, it will get better with time - for me it was around 12 weeks. Not what you want to hear but it’s true
You can try tummy massage, warm flannel on belly, cycling legs in the evening to see if that helps.

Is there any way you can feed her lying on you back with her tummy on you at sort of 90degrees? I had this exact issue with my daughter and I found she would clear a hell of a lot of wind if fed this was of an evening with me rubbing her back in circles and then rubbing from the top of her back down off her bottom. To be honest she will be 2 in about 6 weeks and I still feed her, the windings died down at about 18 months and now she clears it herself first thing in the morning (and looks most shocked by the noise)

Oh no I was hoping there was a cure that I was missing!! I do try bicycle legs and massage but it doesn't seem to help much.
Not sure about that feeding technique but will give it a go thank you.
I don't know why it's worse at night

Hi,
I have 5 week old baby who is bottle fed and went through same thing. We changed her milk to comfort milk which is abit thicker and found it really helped with her wind and change bottle to avent colic bottles which made a massive difference. Everyday we still having to really help her get her wind up but we found the thicker milk had really helped her for sure and sitting her more upright. Hope this helps :)

Are you sure she's got trapped wind? Newborns are very noisy sleepers and it's pretty normal for them to grunt and groan in their sleep, I think it's part of active sleep which is a stage they go through. It's super noisy and not helpful to sleeping mum though so I sympathise!
If it definitely is trapped wind then gripe water we found better than infacol, bicycle legs are amazing for trapped farts too. We'd do bicycle legs every night before starting the night time routine and found it helped loads.
Good luck op!

I am 90% sure (second baby) but also she seems distressed and likes she's straining. I block out a lot of the regular grunts but these go on for long periods and straight after she's had a feed. I feel so bad for her.
I'll get some gripe water tomorrow. She hates the infacol anyway and I'll try anything at the moment! Thank you

@Fizzysherbet22 thank you. I'm reluctant to change her milk as we have done so once already with advice from a midwife! She hinted at which one she thought was best and said we should see an improvement. Maybe we have, I'm not sure. I had forgotten about anti colic bottles though! I shall get one of those. I should also sit her up a bit, I'm eager to get her straight back to sleep so I can sleep.
Thanks for your advice and congrats on the new baby

@Sleepyquest Hi OP, did you manage to find anything to resolve this? My 10m old is exactly the same and I'm at breaking point.
