Accidentally had milk but baby is intolerant

Cut dairy and soya out of my diet due to my exclusively breastfed baby having bloody stools. Have just accidentally eaten a chocolate type bar that my mother in law gave me as she assumed it was dairy and soya free. What should I do? Baby is 5 months nearly.

Is it a none IGE allergy? If yes, just keep feeding. He may react or not to a small amount but your BM will also heal his tummy.

Have you got any expressed milk stored? Dairy doesn't take long to come out of your milk so you could feed expressed milk (and pump for comfort if needed, although you would need to dump it) for the rest of the day?

She refuses to have a bottle :(

I'm not sure? She was never ill/got a rash or uncomfortable she just had bloody poos.

You dont need to pump and dump, you just feed as normal and it'll clear from your milk relatively quickly. She may have a reaction but it should be mild as chocolate is relatively low on the milk ladder

If she won't take a bottle you haven't got much choice - hopefully such a small amount won't impact.

Drink 2 - 3 litres of water over the next 12-24 hrs in an attempt to flush it out?? I don't know what else to suggest.

You can buy Aptamil Pepti 1 from behind the counter in chemists but if she won't take a bottle - that's not going to work.

It's not like you drank a pint of milk, so fingers crossed she's fine with a tiny amount in chocolate. It's been essentially cooked/baked I would assume? So again this should help!

It was a schar metro

Honestly, it's fine. You can't flush it out quicker and there is absolutely no need to subsidise with formula. I have two children with CMPA and slip ups just happen sometime. You're only human, cut yourself some slack and go back to checking every packet, especially if someone else has given it to you.

Blueroses99 · 20/03/2022 17:19

Looks like Schar metro is gluten free but not dairy free. Easy mistake to make and you get used to checking packaging religiously after a slip up. Depending on how sensitive your baby is, you may have up to 3 days of unsettled/grumpy baby, then they will be ok.

It happens OP, try not to beat yourself up. My DS is cmpa and in a sleep deprived haze one day I ordered a vegan cake and then asked for normal milk with my coffee, didn’t even click until I was home what I’d done. Remember, the initial reaction was with a full diet full of dairy, you might not even see a reaction, if you do it will probably just be more mucusy than bloody with just one slip up. Drinking lots of water will make no difference. Try not to fret!
