Outdoor clothing for newborn

I’ve googled umpteenth times about what a newborn should be wearing to go outdoors but struggling to see anything for spring weather in the uk. I know layers are suggested but how many is too many as my baby always seems to be on the warm side.
If I put on a short sleeve vest, trousers and a tshirt, what sort of thickness cardigan is needed? Do I also put a blanket on even if he’s got a thick cardigan/coat? Is a hat, gloves always necessary?
I know I’m probably way over thinking it but I just can’t tell with this nice sunny but not super hot weather we’ve been having.
I also know it should be one more layer than yourself but I’m a cold person and always have extra layers on.

OP I think the purpose of layers is that you can feel the temperature of your baby once you’ve been out for a bit and then reduce a layer if they feel too warm. That’s what I’d do.

The weathers too variable at the moment for a town to really give you a proper answer.

My DS was born in the summer. On the colder days he’d have a short sleeved vest, a sleep suit and a thick ish knitted blanket with a wool hat. On the warmer days he’d have a short sleeved vest, cotton hat, socks and a large muslin folded over a few times as a blanket. If he was too warm we’d reduce the folds in the blanket. We used to find he’d get quite warm in his pram.

I used to keep a few different kinds of blankets under the pram so we could switch them if it was warmer or colder than expected

One layer more than you but no more than four. Yes to blanket if not in a one piece warm fleece etc suit. Hat necessary yes, not gloves because good luck getting them small enough or on 😄 tiny hands usually covered by sleeves or blanket.

@PinkPlantCase ahh ok that’s helpful. So it’s more of a pack a few different thickness of outer layers like blankets depending on how they’re feeling when out and about in different places. That makes more sense especially as like you said this weather is a little less predictable than it’s definitely hot or definitely cold.

@Garman thanks for the reply! I didn’t realise no more than four so that’s helpful to know and about the blanket as we do have some lovely fleece lined pieces that seemed a bit excessive if combined with a blanket.
Oh thank god about the gloves 😂. I’ve tried them a couple of times and he just launches them off his hands

There are charts as a guide on google but generally, baby will let you know if they are cold. Remember if using a carrier that counts as an extra layer.

Tuppence and crumble star wrap is a lovely and really handy layer at this time of year xx

Mine wore a frugi snuggle suit pretty much so the time outdoors in the spring and autumn and cooler summer days. They're about the thickness of a sweatshirt but have legs too so a bit more cosy.

I second the star wrap suggestion. I’ve had my newborn out and about in a vest and sleepsuit, sweater/cardigan/little jacket, wool bonnet and a star wrap blanket + a thicker blanket on top through winter. As the weather has gotten warmer I’ve got rid of the thick top blanket and taken the bonnet off sometimes.

It’s good because it’s easy to get them in and out of, or even keep them partially in, as the weather changes or you go indoors. Much, much better than an awkward pram suit.

It really just depends on the temperature. Right now it has warmed up but it’s still cool, I would have a newborn in a long sleeve vest, sleepsuit, pramsuit and then blanket/footmuff. When it warms up a little more I would maybe go for a fluffy cardigan instead of the pramsuit.
I would always have them in a hat when they are outside even in spring.
