Is he ready to start using potty? If he is, then why FGS won't he?

Now, I have been in no hurry to potty train - I'm just not the competitive sort .

BUT, DS1 is now 2.5 and for the last 4 nights running has waited until after his bath and returning to his bedroom before doing a wee on the carpet.

We've been quite laid back about the whole thing and told him not to worry but to use the potty next time he feels he needs to go, and DH has started actively encouraging him to sit on the potty after his bath.

He DOES sit on the potty but doesn't do anything and then returns to his bedroom to wee on the carpet. He did it tonight and actually told DH that he 'had some more coming' whilst giggling as if it were some kind of game.

So, is it time for me to tackle the dreaded potty training then? Is it worth ditching the potty and just encouraging him to use the toilet (we have one of those Ikea step things to help him reach the toilet)

Any advice gratefully received.

I need ideas and encouragement here, come on!

As I said, I'm really not bothered if he is in nappies for another year, but if he is able to tell us he is going to do a wee then I thought it might be time for us to start encouraging him to use potty/toilet (instead of the carpet).

Have you tried having a potty in the bedroom in case you can catch it? With DD (who we potty trained around 2.4) the main issue was getting her REALLY to understand what was expected of her. Once she did so it was a breeze. So, if you know he is likely to pee on the floor in his bedroom after the bath that's great - be prepared for it, potty at hand and once he starts shove the potty underneath him really quickly. If you manage to catch some wee in the potty, ignore the puddle on the floor and get very over excited about whatever is in the potty. Give him a chocolate button, make a song and dance about how clever he is, call granny etc. With DD once we finally, by sheer luck, caught a wee in the potty it was plain sailing, but when I'd been asking her to sit on the potty previously she'd do just that - sit and sit and sit, then run off and wee behind the curtain.
