Abuse of choc button incentives in potty training!!

ok yesterday ds as soon as I took his nappy off and told him he'd get a choc button, produced (very purposefully indeed) the tiniest wee and then claimed his reward. It was his first ever wee in the potty so I wanted to make a big deal even if it was a tiny drop!

Then at 'nappy off time' today as soon as it came off, he went to the potty and produced the world's smallest poo (great as it is his first on the potty!) and claimed his button.

On both occasions he then did the subsequent wees in his pants....

It seems to me the button thing isn't working...any advice?

Well I suppose what I mean is it is working TOO well.
As in he is playing the system!

I'd say he's doing great. Once DD understood what was expected of her and that she would get a chocolate button for producing she went for it with gusto - the first day she managed to squeeze out about 25 wees in the potty (and claimed the chocolate), as well as wetting her pants on numerous occasions. After about 4 or 5 days, once she'd really started to get the hang of it, I stopped mentioning the chocolate button but would give it to her if she remembered to ask for it. Within a couple of weeks I stopped the chocolate buttons completely. I should keep going.

Just a thought - could you take the plunge and get rid of nappies altogether? I think it might be quite confusing for him sometimes to be expected to wee and poo in a nappy and then have 'nappy off time' when he is expected to use the potty.

Thanks Nelly
It's not a great time for me to do full on potty training due to other stuff happening (long long story) but I do see your point so will try and psych myself up for it!

Oh dear I can just imagine ds being 15 and still asking for a choc button every time he does a wee/ poo....he loves his choc

lol at chocolate button abuse!

Keep it going, he'll get the idea. My ds used to sit for ages without doing anything yelling for his chocolate button

But he soon got the idea and forgot to ask for it quite quickly.

DD used to split each wee into tiny dribbles, then claim a chocolate for each (some control there!), in the interests of her teeth we switched to stickers on a chart.

They're crafty little devils these 2year olds aren't they?
