Child on 9th centile

If you had a child on the 9th for height, how tall did the end up as a teen/ older child/ adult?

Dd is 9th for height and her paed said it people don’t have growth spurts so she’ll always stay there. I have no issue with this but I did think that growth spurts were relatively common or is that sort of built into the centile lines? I’ve also read on a Fb group that smaller children (she was sga) tend to go through puberty earlier, so actually have less time to grow, so they might be on the 9th say for a 12 year old but Puberty triggers the slowing down of growth so they end up falling off the charts etc.

I’m just wondering. I was 75th as a child and then stopped growing at 13 and dropped to 25th by all accounts

& note my dd was 17 when she went through puberty & reached her full height after that

Namechangestimes100 · 16/03/2022 21:12

@mumwon she’s not had a bone scan, I didn’t think they’d do that until a bit later, she 2.5. How old was your dd when she had it?

We’ve wondered about allergies and we’ve been told no, she’s had constant bouts of illness (cheers lockdown, covid, nursery and super bugs) that’s definitely impacted her appetite and knocked her down growth wise, she’s now on shakes to help pick her back up which do seem to be working a bit but of course it’s not a quick fix.

I started my periods at 12/3 but I did start getting hair at 10/11. Stopped growing at 13. DH is Indian subcontinent Asian, wonder if they start later, he said he had a massive growth spurt in y9 and started puberty later that year

You must come from a tall family because 5 foot 8 is tall!

DD was on the 9th for a long time. I disagree with the dates though, by mine she was born at 34 weeks, hospital said 38. She was dinky as a preschooler but is now 5'7 at 16. Her periods haven't really started though, she's only had 2, so I guess may grow a little more.

mumwon · 16/03/2022 23:35

I think dd was a lot older maybe 7/8 long time ago? interesting about your dh (mine comes from subcontinent too) some may well be later - it is a large area with many ethnic/racial mixes it would be interesting. to know about your dp sisters of mother

georgarina · 17/03/2022 09:32

One of my sisters was below the 1st percentile in weight and v low in height and she's now 5'4.

I had a good about women from the Indian subcontinent and starting periods, Pakistan was 12 and India was around 13 same for Bangladesh. DH mum is the only girl and I’d get him to ask but culturally it’s definitely not the done thing

This is very interesting for me right now. My DD (she was a twin) born at 33 weeks because she wasn't growing.

She has always been on 9th centile for weight, height & head circumference (so could be argued is perfectly in proportion). She's recently suffered from gastroenteritis and has spent time in hospital. She's now down to 0.4 centile, but whilst we were in hospital a Dr told us that her weight/height should be being monitored by the Dr's/Paed with her being a potential candidate for endocrinology????

She has an amazing appetite and eats so so well but never gains any weight. I also suspect that she may have allergies

I’m so glad someone told you that because it’s correct, normally I find height concerns are just brushed aside.

How old is she? How tall are you and her dad what’s your Mid parental height centile. Rn your daughter is at the bottom of the chart, they are right that should be monitored as there might be something hindering her growth. The NICE guidelines for an endo referral is 2 centile lines below mid parental height after the age of 2. For hgh for an sga baby (which yours was by the sounds of it) is no catch up or 0.4 and below by 4.

We’re seeing endo soon, i hope they are more through than her paed in investigating lack fo growth

@Namechangestimes100 I'm 5ft 1 and her dad is 5ft 5 so we were never going to produce basketball players lol

Her twin sister is on the 25th centile for height and 50th centile for weight. As of this morning her sister weighed 2.7kg more than her.

I've had a call from the GP's this morning. Based on our conversation she is referring her back to the Pediatrician and the Dietician (she was initially under the paeds but was discharged at 12 months old which coincided with covid hitting so we never actually got to see the Paed for discharge and I was admittedly woefully uninformed of these issues).

"Allergy shiners" (bags under eyes) can sometimes be linked to dairy allergies.

Aren’t there normally other signs too? Every medic we’ve spoken to has dismissed us thinking she has allergies but we’ve thought she has for ages. She enjoys dairy so don’t really want to cut things out unless it’s 20000% necessary you know

Does she have eczema maybe? That's how we ending up finding some of the allergies eg already knew she was allergic to cow's milk, but once we cut out soya too her skin was so much better. The other signs were more obvious, like vomiting and diarrhoea. I definitely wouldn't cut out a food group with no good reason as children not having dairy products do tend to be on average smaller. Is there any coliac disease in the family?

SecondhandTable · 18/03/2022 10:23

Hi OP, I don't have advice but am reading with interest. My DD will be 4 in summer and I've become increasingly worried about her as time goes on. She was born around the 25th centile iirc, not SGA or anything. She rapidly went up the centile lines in the first few months as a baby, stayed up there a bit and then started dropping as she got through toddler ages. She's always been a fussy eater but it's gotten worse and worse, both in terms of variety but quantity too. I'm not joking when I say she eats less portion size wise than she did last summer when she was just turning 3, and a smaller variety of foods too as she refuses more things. She looks permanently exhausted - she has those huge dark purple eye bags even though she typically sleeps 11-12 hours a night, sometimes even more on the weekends. She yawns all the time and is grumpy and tantrums a lot, I think some of this is due to being tired. Mostly all she wants to do at home is lay on the sofa and watch TV. Some days I will be lucky if she eats one meal. She also has eczema, suspected asthma, she gets ill very very often (nursery!). In the last 3 weeks she's had two vomiting bugs and now a cold, the first bug she ended up briefly having to go to hospital for anti sickness meds and fluids. I got the health visitor out in January to weigh and measure her and they werent concerned, I think she was between 10th and 25th centiles for height and weight (from what I can see only slightly above the 10th) which in fairness she has been there generally for the last year or so. So they said they didn't need to do any referrals. I just don't feel we are being taken seriously but I don't want to be neurotic...but i look back at photos of her as a lovely long chunky happy baby and I just feel that something isn't right... I'm genuinely considering getting her checked over privately as my DF would help with the cost if I asked as they are also very concerned about her.

She does have eczema but it’s under control it first got bad just before 6 months but we’ve pretty much had it under control, she did recently get a small flare up under her eye which we had to get a mild steroid cream for.

She’s had the blood test for coeliacs and jt was negative, she’s also had her igf1 tested and it was all normal (apparently this is common in sga kiddos, there growth hormones are normal but because they were born smaller they just need more to catch up sometimes).

She was a sicky baby but my other child is too, she’d was sick here and there past 1 as well, but she thrived from 6 months -1 and rapidly went up the charts from 2nd centile at birth to 25 at 10 months and she was eating dairy then.

LaughingLemur · 18/03/2022 11:26

Would they refer her for skin prick testing to rule investigate allergies maybe? It's so hard getting even paediatricians to take growth problems seriously. I had to really fight to get the growth plate scan. I really hope you can find out what's wrong.

Namechangestimes100 · 18/03/2022 11:41

It so is @LaughingLemur they see height as purely a vanity thing, it’s very frustrating. There might not be anything wrong, as she’s at the lower end of our Mph range and that could be her normal which is totally fine, she’s definitely grown more since been having the weight gain shakes, so she must just eat enough to tick over but not enough to grow and catch up, she’s had virus after virus and obviously they affect appetite so she’s probably shrank her tummy

Dd was 9th percentile at last check, just turned 12. Age 9-10 clothes a bit neat and 11-12 a bit big. She is small but not significantly smaller than rest of class. No sign of early puberty.

Eventually I realised if she is growing and has energy then she is getting what she needs.

LaughingLemur · 18/03/2022 14:08

Hopefully she'll get a break from viruses as the better weather comes and she might catch up a bit. My DD was down on the 0.4 centile a few years ago after a winter of constant illness, but grew a lot the following summer and got back up to between the 2nd and 9th.

LaughingLemur · 18/03/2022 14:15

Oh and her calcium supplements from the doctors got changed to one's with a high vitamin D content and she got far fewer illnesses after that so a vitamin D supplement might help with that?

My son was below 7th until I figured out his allergies. He had several 'diagnosed' allergies but when I found the last one he started growing. He's now probably 75th centile. His brother is around 90th (and always has been).

What were his allergies in the end? And what were his symptoms? X

Ana to dairy, nuts, tree nuts, egg, also allergic to corn, soy (in fact all legumes), all gourds (though this was mainly skin reactions), and then without all that, he still couldn’t sleep at night - would wake every single night and have to be sitting up, plus he kept getting ear infections. It was the 20+ burst eardrums in a year that had me tearing my hair out - found a random google article (no science at this point just trying anything) and it suggested no wheat to help. I cut out wheat and lo and behold he started sleeping through every night within 48 hours, he never got another ear infection and he suddenly started growing. We still minimise wheat now - definitely gives him issues (no, he’s not celiac, it’s the wheat protein).

So our daughter gets cold like symptoms (runny nose, mucus coming out of eyes a bit like conjunctivitis, sometimes cough)
Also diarrhoea for a day or so, she complains of a sore tummy.
When she was very little she also vomited after dairy.

I'd consider doing a good diary and food challenges. Also look into probiotics . Possible food allergy/intolerance issues from your description
