Was your second baby ill as much when they started nursery?

So we have a 13 month old dd who's been at nursery since the start of December and is just constantly ill! Mostly colds, with a couple of rashes, tummy bugs and now covid!
We're hoping to try for a second baby soon, which would give roughly a 2 year age gap. So my question is, if you had a similar situation, was your second baby ill as much when they started nursery?
I feel like the second baby would get sick more before starting, because the older one would bring germs home, but then they should have better immunity when they actually go??

Ohhh my second has been 4x more ill than my first 🙈🙈 it’s been brutal. She started last March & had tonsillitis 6 times in 4 months. Plus HFM & norovirus. Ended up in hospital with that one. We then had the usual coughs & colds for a few months.. then since January, she’s had 2 stomach bugs, an ear infection, chicken pox & covid.

😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

My second was ill all the time as a baby but missed much less nursery and school.
Get the chickenpox vaccine if you don’t have it already, though, and if you can afford it, that’s the last thing you need for either child to catch.

My second got colds when he was a baby which DD brought home from nursery but when he actually started at childcare he didn’t get as ill; he got colds but didn’t get them as badly in my experience

I’ve never thought about it before but no, second born didn’t pick up any of the usual starting nursery bugs, worst we’ve had is a cold. Currently trying to dodge chicken pox though…

No my second baby who started at seven months wasn't sick at all. I had a nightmare with his older sister she was constantly unwell. I was convinced she must have had some underlying health condition as I was convinced that it couldn't be normal as it was a nightmare for us. Then her younger brother who had been very unwell as a newborn sailed through with no issues.

Thanks everyone, this is reassuring (except @Zolla 😂)
@MadameDragon she's booked in for the chicken pox jab in 2 weeks, just got to pray she doesn't catch it before then!

It's the constant time off work that's so hard, if I was on mat leave I would be able to just look after a sick baby the whole time!

Just be prepared that illness often tag teams with two. Stomach bugs hit one DD and then 48 hours later, the next one.. 🥴 similarly covid & chicken pox.. I’ve been working at home with one poorly child for 4 weeks in a row now 🤦🏼‍♀️

DD2 was a lockdown baby in March 2020.. doctors keep telling me this cohort of kids have really poor immune systems as they missed out on building it up as young babies ☹️

Supersnot123 · 16/03/2022 09:19

Ah @Zolla your DD2 is only 1 month younger than my DD then - the Doctor said the same thing to me.
Hopefully by the time our second baby starts nursery covid will be gone/just like a cold, and the usual viruses will have returned to their regular strength!

Dc1 was always ill, picked up all the bugs, colds, hfm, had slapped cheek, chicken pox and always poorly for days and weeks at a time. 12 months between them and Dc2 and rarely ill, had chicken pox without a scratch or whinge, Covid was fine too. Dc3 is similar rarely ill and 19 months between them. Dc4 same as Dc1 always sick and suffers with it been out of nursery more than in since last October. The only anecdotal evidence I have is the Dc1 & Dc4 are boys always sick and dc2&3 are girls and rarely sick, all close in age and same class or where in preschool or nursery together.

DD1 is nearly 3 and DD2 is 18 months and they bring allllllll the germs home with them from nursery! They literally pick up everything, they have both just recovered from being full of cold and have now kindly passed it to me. I can't breathe out of my nose, my throat is sore and I'm losing my voice... thanks kids! Grin
