So pleased with ds, have followed the GF 7-day plan and its worked really well. He's now using the toilet for doing a wee and hasnt had an accident in 4 days.

However although he initially did a poo on the potty, for the last 5 or 6 days he has pooed in his pants every day despite me reminding him and asking him (and bribing him with 'special prizes' if he poos).
How can encourage him to poo on the potty or toilet. GF reckons children learn to control their bowels before their bladders but not so with ds

I'm afraid that ds was like that. It was a long time before he recognised the 'signal' for a poo. We started potty training at Easter last year and he had a 'eureka' moment in September when he said "Mummy, my tummy hurts, I need some medicine" and I said "That feeling in your tummy means you need to do a poo", and off he went. Up to that point he got fewer than half his poos in the loo, after that he hardly had any accidents.

He had been having wee accidents for quite a while after we started though, so as your ds has been quite quick with wees perhaps he'll get the hang of poos soon.

I used to give ds a chocolate button for every minute he sat on the loo around the time he was due to poo, but I'm not sure if it was really helpful to him as it didn't really teach him to recognise the cues from his body.

Whats GF
Think most, if not all, master wee before poo. Once mine were potty trained they would only have poo at bedtime in nappy. It only took matter of few weeks before they started using toilet for poo also. A friend of mine's daughter has been using the toilet for 6 months or so and still poos her knicks every day.
No help, sorry, but ds sounds normal to me, poo in potty will happen in time.
Good luck

We had a similar problem with DTDs. We solved it like this:

Buy a pack of Kandoo wipes.

Display them on top of the toilet cistern

Explain that they are special tissue he can only use after he has had a poo on the toilet (toilet is so much better than potty for poos).

Instant training for poos in our house.

I think that the sneaky poo story helped ds a bit (I have to think back, it seems ages ago already), but in the end it was recognising the feeling in his abdomen that made the difference.

GF is Gina Ford.

Thanks for all your replies. I guess I shouldnt be so stressed about it then, seems pretty normal between everyone Ive spoken to.

I have another question though about when should boys stand up and do wee?

DS wanted to stand up to wee from about 3 months after we started to potty train (so about 3). He completely refused to sit and wee from about 3.4 years, and he won't use his toddler seat to poo either but prefers to balance on the big seat.

But that isn't the question you should be asking. You should be asking "when do boys stand to wee and actually get it all in the bowl?"

lol thank you bran youve given me some great advice on here.

Just train him to only ever sit, if we all raise boys who sit women of future generations will love us forever! I mean really why on earth do men need to stand?

bran · 07/01/2008 20:02

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ah.

Do you have a ds LMG or just girls? The only way to prevent a boy from wanting to stand to wee, IMO, is to never let them see your dh or any other male standing to wee. If they see it, even once, there is no stopping them.

Anyway, making them sit doesn't guarantee that it will all go in the loo. IME it often goes straight in front of them when they're sitting down, usually drenching me from the thighs down.

Bran - the clue is in the name

I am a childminder and did once have a boy who was toilet trained and he did it standing up but he didnt make too much mess really.

I deffo think its a mum of boys thing and mums of girls just don't get it, i'm tryingt o get it though because with my job it helps to be in the know!

Boys should not be allowed in the loo alone until .. .. .. erm oh right yes i see it's never ending..... i'll shut up shall i! What if we teach them to use wipes?
