12 week old won't stop crying

Hello,
My baby girl is 12 weeks old.
Since last night she has been very upset, crying inconsolably throughout the day & night. I don't know what to do. There is no obvious signs of illness. Her temperature is 37.1. She doesn't have any physical signs of illness. She sleeps for around 12-15 hours in 24 hours usually. She usually feeds 8-12 times in 24 hours, EBF.
Since yesterday at around 7:30pm she has cried inconsolably every-time she is awake, she is resistive to feeding and takes a long time to get her to latch and to feed for more than a couple of minutes without crying. In the last 24 hours she has fed less than she usually would. She just seems so upset all the time she is awake nothing distracts her she just cries and cries until she either goes back to sleep or feeds for a few minutes and continues to cry.
I don't know what to do and feel so helpless and sad that she is so upset

Recently had vaccinations?

Wet nappies?

Yahyahs22 · 14/03/2022 19:40

Sounds like gas to me if she's struggling to feed. When she does latch sit her up more while she's latched on and keep her like that for a while

With babies I would always advise calling 111. They will take you through a list of questions and get you an appointment with a doctor if necessary.

Thank you for taking the time to reply

Vaccines are on Thursday so she hasn't had them yet, she had her BCG vaccine about two weeks ago so I don't think it could be related to that.
Wet nappies she usually has 5/6 in 24 hours she has had 4/5 today so slightly less than her usual I would say.
I have given infacol for gas and she has burped & passed wind several times but doesn't seem to be helping, I gave her a warm bath to see if this would help but she continued to cry.

Hi OP - How is your daughter today? Is she teething perhaps? My babies were all fussy, unsettled and cried a lot around the time their first teeth came through. They also didn’t want to feed even though they were clearly hungry. Presumably it was sore for them to latch. I used Anbesol liquid on the sore gum before feeds which really helped and occasionally Calpol if they were really miserable. Teething is no fun! Having said all this, if your daughter has been inconsolable all this time and you’re concerned, it’s always better to be checked out and I’d phone the GP.

I also came on to say it sounds like something could be hurting in your baby's mouth. Check for thrush, but teething is a possibility too, as a PP said.

However, also check your baby's fingers and toes for hairs wrapped round them. Thus can happen easily and be painful and distressing for babies.

ameliaand · 15/03/2022 18:50

Hello,
Thank you both for your replies. I also thought that something could be hurting in her mouth from the way she was crying and she is clearly hungry but won't stay latched long enough to feed! There is no signs of thrush, perhaps she is teething? Is it too early at 12 weeks or is it a possibility? Thank you for that suggestion I will buy some today and try that on her gums see if that helps. She has been chewing her hands a lot but I thought maybe she just discovered them but perhaps you are both right and it's her teeth

Twelve weeks you can definitely expect teeth to start appearing! It does sound a lot like that could be your problem. I hope you can get her more comfortable. Once those teeth come through she’ll be like a different baby!

PenguinLove1 · 15/03/2022 19:05

Phone your midwife. It could be colic, she could be intolerant to something you are eating, or something else completely different, so give yourself the peace of mind and ask for help, it mist be exhausting and worrying for you

endofthelinefinally · 15/03/2022 19:11

If she is still crying after all this time that suggests she is in pain. I think you should be get medical advice. She can't tell you where it hurts. Doctors never mind checking a baby.

endofthelinefinally · 15/03/2022 19:14

Midwives are no longer responsible for babies at 12 weeks. The HV is responsible after 10 days, but if there is any possibility that baby is unwell or in pain, the GP is the appropriate contact. 111 is the best route out of hours.

Ostryga · 15/03/2022 19:18

Check all her fingers and toes for a hair wrapped round them.

Dd had one and I didn’t realise and I had to take her to A&E for emergency surgery to have it removed. Awful.

endofthelinefinally · 15/03/2022 19:21

OP. According to your first post your baby has been crying and distressed for nearly 3 days. Please call 111. I am a retired midwife and I am really concerned, especially as you say she is not feeding.

ameliaand · 15/03/2022 20:15

Hello.
Thank you all for your replies.
I contacted 111 on the first night who told us to see our own GP in the morning. We saw our own GP who said there was nothing physically wrong with her & there was no medical need.
She has settled down this evening with some calpol & teething gel so perhaps the other responses were correct and she is teething and was in pain.
She has fed well in the last hour so I will keep track of her feeds from now.
Thank you all for your help & taking the time to reply it is much appreciated

You didn't say that you had called 111 and seen a GP. I am relieved to hear that.

Slacktacular · 15/03/2022 20:47

@ameliaand so glad she’s feeling better, and that you saw the GP for reassurance. Hope she has a settled night and you can rest easy too

ameliaand · 15/03/2022 22:07

Sorry I didn't update my post with that information you are correct.
Thank you so much all for your help it's been a very stressful few days and so worrying I appreciate all the advice given
