Baby bites

Hi mums. My baby is 9 months. He recently got his two front teeth and he has been very much intro biting recently. I'm not sure why but he would bite my nipples when breastfeeding or my hands when he's playing with me, or my husband in his arm. When we tell him it's not okay to bite he smiles at us and thinks it's funny. I'm worried he will bite someone at nursery. Is biting in his age normal? Should I be concerned?

He's just exploring and doesn't know that biting hurts other people, nor will it make any difference to tell him not to do it. You can still tell him no, just don't expect it to influence his behaviour yet or get angry/punish him if he doesn't respond. When you talk to him he doesn't really understand the words yet and will react the same whether you're saying "Aren't you a beautiful boy!" or something else, that's absolutely fine and means he's learning how to have a conversation.

Teething toys are definitely a good idea and I would give him one if he is biting. Also are you giving any finger foods? That is important around this age to help them learn those skills and for the sharper edges of the teeth to start to wear down as well.

I assume from that poster's name they are trolling but just in case - definitely don't bite them back. For feeding it is a good idea to watch closely as you'll see the signs that they are about to/thinking about biting and you can just stop the feed.

Thanks mums. I'll give him his giraffe and wait it out. Couldn't see the previous posters post on biting them back but glad it got deleted - that's just ridiculous. Yes he's getting finger foods but doesn't seem to have a lot of patience for food and will get tired of eating soon after starting unfortunately so doesn't get through much but still has some food.

I think often when they are teething the like the feel of something against their teeth. My son used to bite my knee but only when he was teething so I wouldn't worry too much as others have said just give him a teething toy. It takes a while before they understand the concept of no so it's good to say it but they just don't understand yet
