Not a lot. Have a read of this

I think most 8 year olds would need a cuddly toy friend, drawing things and a bike. I don't think they'd need much more x

My 10 year old has a lot of board games and marble runs. That’s it.
He has a younger sibling so sometimes plays with his brother’s toys too.

It’s a tricky age because it varies so much. My eldest still played a lot at that age; dolls, sylvanians, Lego, trainset, marble run, drawing, crafting, still really into imagination play…
My second child at that age mostly played outside (football, bikes, scooters) or on mario kart but then in school holidays would play with Lego/trainset/marble run for a solid week at a time so I couldn’t get rid of those things.

I'm imagining how many times I'd hear the words "I'm bored" during the winter if all DD had was some drawing stuff and her Teddy (since the weather has been too bad for cycling...)

She plays with regularly...
Craft stuff... painting, beads, lego, making doll clothes
Board games
Imaginative play... dolls and lego
Books
Outdoors... balls, trampoline, bike/scooter, den making stuff

Yeah books obviously but I wouldn’t include that under ‘toys.’ And yes outdoor toys. But for indoor toys we have board games and marble runs. Obviously we have some art equipment as well. We are a very low screen family as well. We also have plenty of Lego although DS1 isn’t massively fussed.

My child has so many toys, majority he doesn't play with because there's so much can't see wood for the trees. Having a huge clear out!!!

Depends on the child and what their interests are?

When my eldest was 8 he mostly played with loads of lego, dressing up stuff and bike/scooter.

My second loves books, board games, science sets and his bike.

Neither of my two eldest would be interested in cuddly toys or drawing at 8!

I understand the logic behind not having excessive numbers of toys but one toy? (I don't count drawing things as toys, and I'm not convinced bikes are either). What about Lego, dolls, board games, balls? My 7 year old spends hours building with Lego and wooden blocks, doing pretend play with various figures and playing chess/Top Trumps/risk/rummikub/ludo.
