Gestational diabetes - after baby’s born?

ChuckGarabedian · 11/03/2022 15:25

I’m expecting my third baby and have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I didn’t have it in my previous two pregnancies and am trying to manage it as best I can with a sensible diet.

Could I ask for people’s experiences of GD after the baby is born? Did it disappear for you straight after birth? Did it affect the baby after birth? And did it encourage you to sustain any healthier eating habits you’d developed during pregnancy? Would like to hear how others got on. TIA

No effect on any of the babies (I had it 3 times!). I went back to eating normally after the birth and all my tests have been fine since. I don't eat any less chocolate and cake than before but it did help me to recognise what high blood sugar feels like and avoid things I might previously have considered healthy, like a breakfast of high GI cereal, fruit and juice.

I didn't enjoy the diet one bit but I did like not having weight to lose after giving birth!

You can’t be gestational diabetic after the baby is born. You’ll have a test at 6 weeks postnatal and 1 year postnatal. Elevated blood sugars at those tests would indicate type 2 diabetes (or much much rarer type 1)

I haven't had the test to see if I still have it yet. Baby is 7 weeks. Blood test is at end of March. For my mum it went away but she developed type 2 later in life (50s). Same happened to my sister, but earlier (30s) We are more prone to that after GD. No effects to any of the sugar babies (other than me who had gestational diabetes myself at age 31.. never had any issues as a baby or anything because of it). I was my mum's 3rd too and she only had GD with me.
I'm finding that I have more of a sweet tooth now, possibly as I had to avoid it during pregnancy! Bit anxious to see whether i'm diabetic now

Sorry yes this is what I meant, not gestational diabetes after the birth but normal type 1 or 2. I know I will be at increased risk of developing type 2 later in life for example.

That’s reassuring to know, thank you.

No effect.
My baby had apparently of 10, good blood sugar readings and was a normal weight when born at full term. I was out of hospital in about 36 hours with no complications.
I took gd very seriously (yoghurt Berry oars nuts for breakfast, omelette for lunch meat and veg for dinner)
and had walks 3x per day after meals and kept everything low GI. I was diet controlled throughout.

I need to lose a few stone this year to prevent developing t2. The consultant was fairly direct it's a question if when not if, if I done sort it out now.

I had it but wasn't diagnosed until 34 weeks. I ate like a saint for 5 weeks. Went back to normal after he was born. I had a blood test at 6 week checkup and it was gone. With the baby I was told that we would need to stay in for 24hrs as they would need to monitor his blood sugars. They done it once when he was born, about 10 hrs after that and then once in the morning. He was absolutely fine. They did encourage me to feed him quite quickly after birth to help him stabilise his blood sugar. Good luck!
