Constant Nosebleeds

My son has always had regular nose bleeds, they just start for no reason and he used to get them about once every 2 weeks or so.
I took him to doctor about it and the doc said he was fine, just a sensitive nose.

Anyway for the past 2 weeks or so he has had a nosebleed more or less everyday.

Surely something must be causing it?

my ds suffered with this,he would wake up in the night and the blood would gush from his nose, sometimes the bathroom would look like an abatoir!! The gp was not concerned at all and said he would grow out of it, which he has as he,s now 19 and hasnt had a nosebleed for about three years.

southeastastra · 04/01/2008 20:12

mine gets them, not as often as yours though mrssnape, he gets them once a month or so.

had one today funnily enough. i do think it's quite common, but i'd see dr if everyday.

poor him.

Acinonyx · 04/01/2008 23:02

Dd gets them usually at night. We put a humidifier in her room and I think it helps.

I'd be more worried if it were every day and would probably go back to the gp (as long as you don't get the dreaded virus going round...). I'd want tomeone to take a better look.

I had lots of nose bleeds when I was younger. What helped me was cautrization at the age of 18.

Acinonyx · 05/01/2008 21:36

What was it like having that done RT - I'm nervous about getting that for dd some day.

binklegoestoLondon · 05/01/2008 21:42

dd has this - doctor said it was a weak capillary and nothing to worry about but if it got too bad she could have it cautherised which wouldnt be pleasant for her so last resort. She hasnt had one for about 6 months now she is 5.

Acinonyx · 06/01/2008 00:22

Just got up with dd who had another nose bleed. They're usually at night and of course she has to be washed, changed, bedding changed etc. Total PITA.

The advice I read said 'pinch your toddler's nose for 10 MINUTES'!!! 10 seconds more like. Or maybe they forgot the bit about using restraints and a general anaesthetic.

MAMAZON · 06/01/2008 00:25

Ds gets them frequently.

i have been told that it is probably that his veins are inflammed and so the slightest knock or increase of pressure (if he gets hot) will cause the bleed.

we have been given creams and nasal sprays whihc do help for short periods.

Acinonyx · 06/01/2008 00:33

Was that from your gp Mamazon? Can you remember which they were? Perhaps we should ask our gp again.

Joash · 06/01/2008 00:59

GS went through a phase where he would get two or three a day. Then it seemed to stop and he didnt get one for about 18 months. Recently had around six in a month - but appeared to have stopped again. It's supposed to be fairly common, particularly in boys.

MAMAZON · 06/01/2008 01:08

can't remember what they were called but there are a few on teh market. yes we got them through teh GP on prescription.

Has your central heating been on a lot?

southeastastra · 06/01/2008 17:25

son had another one just now. would the central heating cause them?

colditz · 06/01/2008 17:36

Yes, it might dry the membranes in his nose out making them more delicate.

redadmiral · 06/01/2008 17:39

Combination of a cold and central heating sets me and DD2 off. She's had quite a few recently. Also hot weather generally does it...

southeastastra · 06/01/2008 17:42

yes they always seem more common in the summer and the last few days i suppose as it's so cold, so the heating is on alot more.

they're quite frightening (to me) but son doesn't seem that bothered.

redadmiral · 06/01/2008 17:47

I never minded having them - huge amount of blood and shock value, but no pain!

southeastastra · 06/01/2008 18:02

doesn't it even make you a bit light headed?

son had one in the car once, i had to stop to mop it up. that really frightened me.

redadmiral · 06/01/2008 20:19

TBH your son's ones sound worse than mine... except the one I had in hospital post C-section when I'd been given Warfarin to prevent blood clots .

I've never felt light-headed from them, but perhaps others do?

allthatglisters · 06/01/2008 22:13

My DS has had vessels cauterised 3 times in nose cos of constant nosebleeds - had it done when referred to ENT dept from GP - only took a moment and not uncomfortable for him - slightly stingy perhaps. More recently GP took another look as they started up again but said there were no enlarged vessels and instead prescribed some anti-inflammation cream to squirt up which also worked well - in fact I think it might have been cos it was keeping the nose lining moisturised perhaps which helped.

Acinonyx · 07/01/2008 20:34

The heating definitely makes it worse. We have a humidifier by her bed and that helps a lot (even though her door is open).
