Inconsolable night screaming

Hi mums. For the past week or so baby (9 months) wakes up at night crying / screaming. Nothing seems to console him. When he wakes up I typically offer the breast and that sends him back to sleep. However for the past few nights he'd get even more irritated when I try to feed him. I also offered a bottle with water and also with formula and they were both rejected. He cries even more when I try to feed him. Rocking works to a certain extent but as soon as we stop crying starts again. He typically passes out after 15 min of crying or so. I'd love to know what may be happening! Would this have happened to anyone else before? What worked?

Hello! A growth spurt? Teeth?

Scary dream maybe? Or separation anxiety? Their brain is developing so rapidly at is point. My DS went through lots of phases like this and the only thing that worked was lots of cuddles and time. Usually it worked it’s way out the phase in a few days.

9m is peak sleep regression, so should pass in a month or so. Separation anxiety really kicks in along with growth spurts and brain development. He probably just needs you close for comfort.

I can’t answer about what’s happening, but I wonder if sometimes babes just have big emotions that they just need us to hear. You know like when you have a big cry and you don’t want to be told how to fix it, you just want to cry and be told that it’s really hard and it’s okay to cry… maybe your LO just needs those cuddles?
(Granted, that doesn’t help you actually reduce the cries at night!)

Thanks mums. I guess we will just ride it out. Like you say there's so much happening in their brains at this point it's probably not worth overanalysing. (Love this forum - always so much wisdom!)
