Lump on baby’s hand…

Hi all,
I’ve already phoned and booked an appointment with the doctors but I’m panicking a bit and not being seen for a few days.
This morning I noticed a lump on my 9 month olds hand. It’s at the bottom of his ring finger where the finger meets his palm. The lump is super hard, like bone and isn’t visible when you look at his hand. I’ve obviously touched it and my partner applied a bit of pressure to see if it was causing him any pain or discomfort, he didn’t flinch at all and is completely as normal in himself.
It’s just come out of nowhere, it wasn’t there last night… he often falls asleep holding my hand so I assume I’d notice. It can’t be an injury as, like I’ve said, he doesn’t seem to notice it and it doesn’t cause pain.
Could it be some kind of cyst? It really is like rock hard. Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

Yes, nothing different at all. I’ve checked all his fingers and all are straight and he’s bending them fine. Holding his bottle normally, playing with toys as usual.

My son had this when he was a baby. I noticed it one day while I was holding his hand when he was in the carrier and I still remember the feeling of my blood running cold. Exact same place you describe.

It was in lockdown so I had a call with the GP and she seemed very unmoved by it. Said it’s likely to just be on of those thing. I felt a bit more relaxed about it then and just left it. It did hang around a bit but disappeared on its own within about 6 months.

Obviously speak to your doctor but hopefully that puts your mind at rest a bit :)

Thank you so much for your reply. I’m honestly so panicked about it, I don’t understand how something like that can just appear suddenly, and especially with no injury! But your post has definitely helped ease my mind a little.

Did it just completely disappear and hasn’t returned?

I get ganglion cysts at the base of my fingers where the finger meets the palm. You can't see them, but can feel them under the skin. They'll appear from nowhere stuck around for a few months/years then disappear.

No idea if babies can get them, but fingers crossed it's something like that as they are harmless.

Good luck Thanks

@Normando91 I think I remember finding it when he was about 8 months and it definitely took ages to go - I want to say 6 months but could have been even longer than that. I don’t remember it disappearing overnight, because I stopped noticing it. But one day must have checked and it was gone.

He’s 2.5 now and I haven’t noticed anything like that since (fingers crossed).

Like a previous poster, I think I decided it was something like a ganglion.

I’m glad it has helped - I know when I googled I didn’t find anything similar really so hopefully hearing it has happened to someone else will ease your panic slightly! Good luck with doctor :)
