Hi All
pls can someone who had in same situation guide me
my son who is exactly 36 months now is having severe speech delay. I raised the concerns when he was 2 year old and got SLT assessed with difficulties in all play social skills, receptive language, expressive language. He has no problem with audio they havent released saying he still didnt do some activities n will be called in 6 months time and no eye sight issues.
he is my only child and we are in uk alone with no relatives family. we are from asian country. we both work and childminder raised earlier some doubts but brushed she knew a child who didnt speak until 5 blah blah. recently when I met a friend and her 2.5 year old daughter is way ahead in talking and expressing what she wants.
its a long post so pls read it and let me know your thoughts

my son doesnt ask for anything. he tries to take us and show if he wants something.
He doesnt play with kids . he seems shy
Doesnt understand potty training. He will simply say nothing after soiling nappy. we have to smell it and clean. he has very few words.
doesnt always responds to his name . he calls himself baby n doesnt talk much. till now I remember only twice he had tantrums. easy child. plays alone. lines up trains n cars. obsessed with tractors wheels etc. I have many books will only go to vehicles page n says train ambulance police car excavator etc and nothing else.
fussy eater .
makes eye contact inconsistently.
smiles and lauugh when I do animations or tickles etc. but does smile at us when we smile too. today I had tears in my eyes as I was feeling really upset and he found it funny n laughed.

any advice. should I push for autism assessment. i am in london. does anyone know how much it cost to go private.
thanks.

With the obvious caveat that no-one can possibly diagnose over the internet, it does seem that there are enough concerns there, to make further assessment worthwhile in my opinion.

knitnerd90 · 07/03/2022 00:24

Absolutely can't diagnose but there are some definite red flags (taking your hand to show you instead of pointing is a big one) that would make me push for an assessment.

Hello

This is my first time in any community,
Need some help or some stories that have success for children getting their speech sorted or comes to life.

My daughter was 1.6 years when she started to say single words then lockdown open and his brother start going to school and we parents start our work activities and all of a sudden our daughter got muted and stop saying even a single word. Then we went to GP and for now she is referred for ENT and other classes but no progress yet

She is 3 now and start saying only few single words and try to copy our difficult words

So want to know any success stories that occurs to anyone that their child start speaking after 3 or 4 years

Please do reply

Thanks

Hello @Raheel1625, my DD said very little until she was 3 and then started with sentences.

I'm just wondering if your DD has been assessed by a Paediatrician?

2bazookas · 26/12/2022 13:48

It sounds to me as if he spends most of his waking day with a poor childminder who offers very little interaction or stimulation.

she knew a child who didnt speak until 5 blah blah sounds like CM covering up her neglect.... with a great big red flag.

How are you getting "neglectful childminder" from the OPs post? It sounds like he has some pretty strong indicators that he is likely to have autism and/or other developmental delays, not fair to blame the childminder for that.

Completely agree. Numerous nd red flags in that post. But some people love to blame parents and carers for any issues children have. As the parent of a nd child I have experienced this numerous time, particularly from my own mother!

My 3 year old has delayed speech and we have been receiving support via SLT for around 6 months.

Due to challenges around her age were using input modeling as at this age the recommendation was that parental support works best.

However my daughter is engaged, very sociable and clearly trying to speak but has clarity issues and very much seems to fall into that group of kids who are just a little slower in developing speech and will catch up in the end even with limited intervention.

Your child sounds like a completely differ story and if your instinct is that something isn't right then you need to push for support and don't let them fob you off by suggesting that it's a common issue - better to understand sooner rather than later what is going on. Good luck!

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/12/2022 17:37

It does sound as though she could be a little behind.

I'm glad she's in the waiting list to see a Paediatrician. Is she also being seen by a Speech & Language Therapist?

There's a useful Progress Checker from Talking Point. It will tell you If she needs support with Speech and Language. They have a helpline as well if you need to discuss the results of the progress checker.

It's taken a long time for us to get a referral for assessment for ASD. I'm glad that your DD has been referred early Flowers

What might be confusing here is the OP (from March) is about one child, but then Raheel has picked up the thread 9 months later and started talking about her child - a different child and a different situation from what people will read as the Opening post.

@Idris23 any updates??

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/01/2023 06:53

@Raheel1625 how are you getting on now?

Raheel1625 · 26/01/2023 07:36

Hello Priti

hope you doing fine- thanks for your reply and concern. Only yesterday we got a detailed report from the main paediatrician and the assessment came back ( mild to moderate Autism) hearing that was so helpless and distraught even we knew that was coming-now we have been giving so many classes to join and workshops online for parents only-then next appointment 3 months time

so the speech and language thing not been referred yet- Dr said that will come well later first you need to train as parents to support your child.
All was so important stuff but we thought they will provide sessions for our child so she can get speech therapy but this was not the case those will be on us to handle and take forward-
my daughter say about 25 clear single words and then about 25 words which are unclear

try double words but not clearly pronounced

she can repeat all the single words if we tell her to say-takes all the instructions- her motor skills are good also

but now she is 3.3years goin to nursery but we don’t know what steps we can take that will give our duagther the environment and support so she can start developing double words and start saying sentences.
So Priti any good intel you can provide that will be best for us to use- and how often and how long this will take my daughter to start saying normally

please do reply and contact if you can so we can discuss further

thanks for reading
take care
