I've always done bedtime stories but up until now it's just been short children's books. My son is now ready for longer chapter books but I need some good suggestions!
All we've done so for is George's Marvellous Medicine because I loved that as a child. We're trying The Twits but he's not as interested. I used to love the wishing chair and the faraway tree when I was younger and something similar to this would be good as they are short 1 chapter adventures (but have really aged now!!).
What are really good bedtime books for a 5 year old that are a little more up to date?

At that age my son loved the Rory Brannigan Detective series. He read them on his own and we read them together- I enjoyed them too.
They are good for that age because there are illustrations on every page and not too much writing so not too arduous.

My 5 year old has enjoyed The owl who was afraid of the dark and Horrid Henry. And most of Roald Dahl as well (the twits actually being a particular favourite, as well as the magic finger)

Rory Branagan (Detective): Book 1 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0008265836/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttiNDASG8Y8R5KB9B2GCCBV

My son loved the Jeremy Strong books. Or Geronimo Stilton (but I hated reading them).

Thank you @happychristmoose - ideally I'm looking for something I wouldn't mind reading to him too so that sounds like a good start! Have ordered the first from the library and seems there's a few in the series so hoping we like them!

Oh, I loved the owl who was afraid of the dark when I was younger @Borracha and had forgotten about that one. Will try horrid Henry and the magic finger (never read that as a child!)

Ok, might give Geronimo Stilton a steer for now! There's a couple of Jeremy strong books in my library so will start there!

Hotel flamingo is a nice transition into chapter books. My 5 year old loves them. There's pictures on every page

The last firefox by Lee Newbery is brilliant

Jeremy Strong (But I hated the roman ones - a talking crow! I struggled to get into it!! Try my brothers famous bottom series.)
The tree house books.
Hosted on MN but loved by millions of kids David Walliams - try The World's Worst series.
The Far Away Tree - classic but good.
Danny Champion of the World or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are the RD I would read at that age.
