What is going on with my 16 month old??!

Little one is 16 months old and this week has been a little unwell. Snotty, cough, slight temp for one day, negative LFT. In the day generally fine, happy to play, eating drinking well and normal nappies. Been bit wingey but can be like that when he's not 100%.

It's what's happening in the night this week that I am actually finding scary! For the past 4 or so nights he has been waking and then having the most almighty, what I can only describe as meltdowns. Over an hour of screaming, crying, throwing himself around, not wanting to be held, not wanting to be put down, .banging his head, hitting himself etc. I have never witnessed a meltdown like it. My eldest never had these.
It takes over an hour to calm him down, tried Calpol, milk, singing, rocking etc but it's incredibly hard to do anything when he's just throwing himself around screaming.
Do we think this is medical? And he's actually got something like an ear infection? But why is it not happening in the day? Nightmares maybe or behavioural? I haven't taken him to the doctor as he doesn't really seem ill and is happy, chatty and sociable in day, just a little wingey.
Last night was the absolute worst, took me 1 hr 45 to finally calm him and back to sleep. I can honestly say I was scared how bad he was.
Any experience as it what this might he? Is this a permanent thing? Or just temporary? I honestly feel like I can't go out and leave him with his dad when he is like this!
Thank you all....being sleep deprived this week is hard but I am more worried what is causing these outbreaks! X

Op no advice I'm afraid just here to empathise, that sounds awful for both of you. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon Flowers

My son did exactly the same and it was an ear infection - get him to a gp. It really is horrid & I hope you can get it sorted, it’ll be linked to his illness for sure

Thank you both for your response, I did wonder ear infection, I kind of hope it is that as it is so worrying!
I am sitting in out of hours docs now waiting to be seen!

Ear infection, if there's pain discomfort or glue ear lying down can make the sensation worse for them.

AntiHop · 05/03/2022 12:24

Could be night terrors. They're so stressful

Thank you all!
Just got back from docs, red ears, crackly chest and throat doesn't look brilliant! Anytime biotics prescribed! I hope it does the trick!
Funny thing is thou he's generally been fine, not ill, just so upset at night!
I hope this does the trick and it isn't nignt terrors Sad sounds awful!

Mine wasn't sick all during the day just very upset at night and it turned out he had ear infections and glue ear for months without us knowing.

I really hope last night isn't as bad as last night....he has only had two doses of antibiotics so it's likely to be.
It's really interesting to hear people have had the same experiences. I was getting so worried and scared about it, I just hope in a couple of days he goes back to his usual happy self x

This was my DD, she’s now 16 months but had 4 ear infections over 6 months and always, always worse at night. I’m an (adult) nurse and have absolutely no idea what made the nights worse but it always was! Usually by night 2/3 of antibiotics she went back to being a dream.

Update:
So after two doses yesterday, last nignt was a bit better. We had one meltdown, he was awake for over an hour but the actual meltdown bit was only short lived.....so things hopefully seem to be improving this end!
Ear infections are so nasty, and really hard to pick up on in little ones Shock
