What kind of teen / adult did your 7-year-old daredevil become?!

My DS age 7 had an accident today falling off a wet and therefore slippery wooden bench he’d climbed on. A nasty, scary fall. Massive egg on his head.

I’m distracting myself from the worry by musing whether he’ll be a teen doing parkour and giving me kittens in 10 years!
So if this sounds like your child when they were 7, please tell me - are they still like it now, or did they mellow and grow out of it?

He started diving for dive sticks in the pool at 2, rode a pedal bike confidently at just turned 4. He has very little fear and is always leaping around, taught himself somersaults on the trampoline etc. He runs everywhere, rides his bike down steep grassy hills for fun. Climbs every tree he sees. And fences, statues, bollards if he can get away with it. Can’t pass the stream on our way home without trying to cross it on stepping stones or logs. He’s not into team sports but loves gymnastics and is just very, very lively. And lovely, I adore him but it’s exhausting!

I’d love to know how your 7-year-old daredevils turned out!

I married an ex 7 year old daredevil. Having to be airlifted off a mountain twice as a result of skiing incidents slowed him down eventually. I might be biased but I think he's turned out okay. By the time we met in our early 20s he'd calmed down a lot.

Mine is 15 and does do parkour and did gymnastics until lockdown. He likes ice skating and was pretty good at skiing as soon as he tried it - just seems to be able to do anything that involves balance. Is more cautious than he was at 7 and teenage hormones kicked in so he doesn’t like getting out of bed much if doesn’t have to.

If you want to hear about a 1970s female version, I was this kid.

Jumping creeks, playing in mud, rigging rope swings, climbing cliffs in the old quarry. By 10, and largely left unsupervised all weekend, I'd graduated to breaking into people's houses. I wasn't a thief; boring grown-ups had nothing I wanted to take. But I liked to rearrange the ornaments or leave a stack of cushions in the middle of the floor just to mystify the owners.

I knew I was a bad kid and resolved to clean up my act. But I was incredibly restless and frustrated until I discovered ballet at age 15, then cycling and ballroom dancing.

Finding worthwhile outlets has kept me out of trouble.

Well, I guess he's a lot more sensible at 27 than he was at 7. At least he's should be - but he's currently off work nursing yet another broken bone

My 7year old daughter was like this and she's 11 now and still the same - regularly does things which are unbelievably dangerous and doesn't even consider it beforehand (or afterwards actually).

I live in hope she'll get some sense soon.

Mine is only 11 now but very very sporty and competitive. Into martial arts and football. Still loves giving himself a good injury. When he was at preschool I felt like I signed an accident report daily.

My middle two aren’t like that at all, but the youngest dd is absolutely the same. I don’t worry because I presume she’ll just end up like ds!

My 20 yr old currently has concussion.......

Thanks everyone, your davedevils all sound like great characters, and it sounds like mine won’t be changing any time soon! 😆

Mine is 13 now still very sporty and daring. A new ninja warrior place opened up and he managed all the obstacles with ease and in the fastest time that day - even against adults!

Echobelly · 05/03/2022 13:29

My brother was a bit like that, loved climbing tall things.

He wasn't at an especially risk- taking teenager but he channeled that energy into hiking, youth hostelling and joining venture scouts to do things like potholing.

Mine is now an RAF Air Cadet

harrumphs · 05/03/2022 13:37

My 10yo climbed everything when he was younger! He's calmed down now but it very sporty and physically able. His older brother wasn't as much of a climber BUT never sat still and still never does. He jumps over everything he can, loves doing somersaults on the trampoline, loves rollerblading and BMXing along with lots of team sports. He's the one who had and still does have lots of injuries though it's a lot less frequent now he's a young teen.
You're right, it is exhausting, but I do love that they get so much enjoyment out of sport and just moving / being active in general. Unlike me Grin
