What should she wear (swimming)

Two year old starts lessons on Tuesday. I've got no clue what she's meant to wear. I've had a look at M&S and some have legs covered and arms and others are just normal swimsuits.

She'll be going with her dad but it's been left to me to find the right gear.
Are the cover up ones to protect her skin from the chlorine? Also. Where on earth do I find swim nappies?!

Please can someone give me a steer in the right direction?

You'll need 2 nappies, 1 usually disposable (supermarkets etc) and a neoprene happy nappy over the top. Who are the lessons with? They normally send info out.

Then you just need whatever swimsuit you want over top of nappies,

Mol1628 · 04/03/2022 14:43

Assume it’s an indoor pool in the uk - most girls here wear a simple all in one swim suit - without covered arms or legs.

Swim nappies you can get from the supermarket or Amazon.

No. The cover ups trap a layer of water next to the skin and keep them a bit warmer.

Swim nappies- boot, supermarkets, anywhere.

Any swimsuit will be fine. Has she never been in a pool before? How long would she normally last before getting cold?

How long is the lesson? Half an hour she should be fine in just the swimsuit. You could see how she goes and get a rash vest to wear on top for the following week.

You can get swimming disposables from any big supermarket - they're a bit pricey mind. Only put them on just before you go into the pool as they don't hold wee. You can get reusable ones too (happy nappy I think), I got a pair on eBay for mine.

Girls in DC's swim class wear either all in ones with short sleeves and shorts or swimming costumes.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 04/03/2022 14:46

Oh and don’t get a swimsuit with frills and girly adornments- looking at you Next- the more loose flappy fabric the heavier and more unwieldy it will get and make it difficult to swim.

RandomQuest · 04/03/2022 14:48

You can can get disposable swim nappies e.g. Huggies Little Swimmers in supermarkets or Boots and you can also buy swimming costumes that contain a reusable swim nappy, JoJo have loads but other places sell them too. Some pools, like the one we go to, insist on both a reusable and a disposable underneath if not toilet trained so do check. If it’s a baby pool or one in a private house it’s probably warm so a traditional swimsuit will be fine. If it’s a leisure centre then you might want to do a rash vest to keep her warm. If you’re worried about her skin and the chlorine then shower as soon as you can afterwards to rinse off the chlorine.

Thanks everyone. Will order one tonight!

Our pool had a double nappy policy (one disposable and a reusable one on top). That was for when he was much younger though. The pool was also not heated very well and the babies were smaller so we’re wearing little wet suits. A nice warm pool and a 2 year old she will be fine in a normal swimsuit.

britneyisfree · 11/03/2022 22:33

So she went in a normal costume.... all the other kids had full on like surf outfits or something.
Sadly she didn't like it anyway. Going to get her another one and hope for the best she has better experience next time! Going to do a family swim too in the meantime.

I’m confused… do you need a disposable swim nappy, a reusable one AND a swimsuit? So three layers? Confused

Yes ours does. 3 layers total, or two layers if you just use the second nappy layer like a happy nappy, as shorts!
Wait4nothing · 13/03/2022 07:26

We used to swim in a warm pools so just had a disposable nappy and neoprene nappy as the swimsuit. No extra layer. But I colder pools we used all in ones (also good for summer as help cover skin)

whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy · 13/03/2022 07:29

Was it her first time in the pool? I think you need to probably take her outside of the "lesson" to get her used to it.

Your response sort of reads like she didn't like it because others were wearing something else, which made me ,🤣

cherrytree975 · 13/03/2022 07:30

Thanks! So I’ll need a disposable swim nappy, plus a non-disposable swim nappy over that, plus a swim suit on top?

Is it best to buy a swimsuit with a built in buoyancy aid or just a plain suit? My DD is the same age as OP’s.

I don’t understand why you need a disposable nappy underneath something like this:

www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/happy-nappy-flamingo-h2377.html

Is it just to give an extra layer of protection?

I wouldn't actually bother with swimming lessons until she's about 3.

Take her to family sessions once a week and get her used to be water and confident (which actually means YOU have to be confident enough to let her get her head under water etc)

cherrytree975 · 13/03/2022 07:40

@ChairCareOh got it now, thanks! Grin

😂 Yeah it does. That wasn't why she just didn't like it. But I was watching from the gallery and noticed she had something different on before they got in!

And yes it was her first time

Her dad loves swimming and will definitely be confident enough to let her do that. I unfortunately am I a poor swimmer who won't go under water (hence my keenness to get her started early!) so that's why he is the one going in with her.

I think you're right. Fortunately I think we've only paid for the month.

Yup

I think it's odd too but as pp says, wouldn't want poo everywhere!

It took 2 sessions before my ds, then 2y3m, would stop screaming for long enough to put his toes in the water. After 6 he will go in up to his waist. Reluctantly. Definitely agree that informal sessions are good preparation!

You can get reusable versions of the inner layer. I think Bambino Mio do one.
