Sleep after illness

Hi guys,

So my little one has been ill recently which resulted in a hospital trip. He's on the mend now but his sleep has become terrible.

So before being ill he'd have 3 naps a day. One around 10am, one around 1pm and one around 4pm. He doesn't have a set bedtime as such but he's always in bed before 9pm. Usually between 7.30 and 8.45 depending on length of last nap.

Whilst he was ill he was having 4/5 naps a day and sleeping all night, which I assume was because he was so exhausted from being ill.

The issue is that now, he's fighting his first nap of the day, it's taking ages to get him down and then he wakes up after only 15/20 minutes. At night time he's going to bed fine but waking up anywhere between 30 mins to 2 hours after and is awake for around an hour and a half just crying and won't re settle. He's also doing this around 3/4/5am too where he'll wake, toss and turn and cry for over an hour till eventually dosing off.

I'm just wondering how long it's taken other peoples LOs to get back to routine after illness? Is there anything I should be doing?

I do think part of the issue is that during the illness he was falling asleep on boob and having a lot of contact naps so it's almost like his sleep association's have changed and he wants to be held/feed to sleep for every nap. I don't quite know how to fix it and get back to him being rocked for about a minute and put down drowsy. I've been trying since he started getting better but he just sobs.

Any advice?

Could it be time to transition to two naps?

Jurassiclover · 04/03/2022 23:58

@Duracellbunnywannabe possibly, he's only just turned 7 months though so I thought I had a bit longer left on 3 naps!

My girls dropped to one nap by 12 months (it’s amazing by the way). I’m afraid I can’t remember when they moved to two naps. Maybe give it ago and see what happens. You can always go back after a couple of weeks if it isn’t working.

The internet seems to suggest 3 to 2 nap transitions happens between 6 to 8 months so it probably is that.

Ahhh that makes sense then actually! As it turns out he's ended up only having 2 naps today so I think you're right!
