Bathing newborns

How often do/did you bath your newborn?

Do you give them a full bath or just a wipeover with wet cotton wool?

Do you use soap?

Just curious as to what others do Smile

I didn’t give any of mine a proper bath until they were over a week old when their cord had dried out and fallen off.
They were all born covered in vernix and I wanted them to get the full benefit. I just did cotton wool and warm water to keep their faces, hands, pits and bits clean.

My DD is 16 days and we did get the bath out the other week and she went in for about 20seconds! Use wet cotton wool for her hair and a quick wipe everywhere else.

Was too worried about her getting cold!

Thinking about giving her another body wash but with a bowl of warm water and cotton wool.
Not planning to use any soap or anything.

Is a wash like this once a week ok? I've seen some people are doing this daily....

I did a wash once a week for the first month. The first 2 weeks with just water and cotton wool and the second 2 weeks in the bath with just water and a sponge. From a month old I started adding soap to the bath and 3 times a week . Once a week worked fine for us to begin with as I didn't want to dry his skin out when so little.

We used a bucket shaped baby bath and did it every couple of days - baby feels secure and it's a quick dunk, wash, rinse and out. Loved newborn baby bath time! Never had skin issues other than face baby acne / cradle cap. Used child's farm baby bath.

Post bath massage with olive oil or similar was also a lovely routine to do a couple of times a week.

We bathed both of ours for the first time when they were a week old but used no soap or shampoo or even wet wipes till they were a month old.

We used cotton wool and warm water (straight from the hot tap) to wash face and hands twice a day from birth.

We bathed just once a week for the first couple of months then every other day.

Daily is too much, the water dries out their skin. Top and tail is good. No soap, it can make them react/itch and then they scream endlessly for no reason (imagine if your entire body itched and you couldnt coordinate moving your arms to scratch... unbearable).

Once your baby is a little bit bigger they often do love a little bath though. Ahhhh I miss having a tiny baby! Enjoy.

DD was on NNU for the first week and by the time we’d properly settled in to everything she was about 3 weeks old before her first bath. Cotton wool and warm water before that point and then just plain water for ages. Now she’s 6 mo she has a dunk with her big sister who has child’s farm bubbles and loves the water! I don’t put anything on her skin at all apart from that.

Once a week is fine. We took turns to have a bath ourselves and then the other one of us brought the baby up at the end and we added the baby to our bath! It's easier when you're in there too, and it being a full bath meant the baby could float and swim so it was fun. We did have a couple of poo incidents, but the adult just hopped out quick and jumped in the shower!
Other than that we just used warm water and a facecloth every couple of days.

Every night with no soap. From 2 days old.We still do at 8 months. We put coconut oil on him every night and no issues with skin. We bought soft fluffy face clothes from the pound shop and but that over his body to keep him warm. He loved it. Now he just goes wild in the normal bath in his little seat. He gets bubbles now.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 03/03/2022 22:31

From a week or so we've done it daily (once the cord dropped off). Before that it was just a bath occasionally to keep clean. Shes 15 weeks now and bath is part of our bedtime routine.

jupitermars1345 · 04/03/2022 12:47

I've always bathed DD weekly since a week old unless she needs it more often due to being very messy
9 months now
A bit of baby bubble bath and that's it really.
No skin issues

RedHerring24 · 04/03/2022 22:11

We didnt bathe DD for the first week at all. I was terrified of the cord becoming infected or falling off too early!
From week 2 we bathed using the bath seat in our main bath with just water and cotton wool. We did this once a week but did a 'bed bath' eaver other day.
After the first few weeks we added in a baby wash and shampoo and moisturised her skin after as she had flaky skin.
Not had a problem at all.
