Received contradicting information from my health visitor and friends dietician. Health visitor says that it’s not necessary and friends dietician says that it is!

It isn't necessary as follow on milk was only invented to get round the laws that ban the advertising of first milk. First milk can be used until age 1. I did switch around 9 months as follow on was cheaper and you could get offers on it.

Thanks @dementedpixie this is exactly what my health visitor told me. I guess the dietician looks at things from a different perspective. I will keep an eye on the price of the follow on milk Smile

www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/types-of-formula/

Nhs says no benefits to switching to follow on milk. There are claims of extra iron but there is iron in first formula and they can get more from food too.

Totally echo this. I used No 1 until 12 months. Recently had DC2 and overheard midwives telling first mums not to go onto follow on milk because it was only invented to get around advertising rule.
I did switch from Aptimal to Cow and Gate 1 because latter was cheaper, and DD didn't bat an eyelid about change.

It’s not necessary, as in stage 1 milk still meets all their needs. However, it’s cheaper, frequently on special offer and you can collect/use Boots points. I fell for the HV it’s all marketing line with my first and didn’t twig until I had my second how much money I wasted doing that, so this time I switched bang on 6 months.

It’s interesting to hear how often it is on offer and how people get tricked into paying more unnecessarily! Thanks for the heads up!

I changed to it recently too for 9 month old. Weaning off the boob completely now before going back to work and if I can save a few bob on formula that's great.

The whole no special offers allowed/exclusion from points thing actually annoys me. Like us silly little wimin will see a special offer on formula and decide to pack in breastfeeding because of it?!
