No breast milk

Wondering if anyone has gone through the same thing? My LO is nearly 6 months now and I had no milk at all at any point in my pregnancy or after my LO was born, not a single drop just nothing at all!
Everyone I’ve spoken to personally has never had this!

Did you try and breastfeed? How do you know you had no milk?

Babdoc · 24/02/2022 20:56

OP, there is a condition called breast hypoplasia, where the breast contains insufficient glandular tissue to produce and secrete milk. There is no treatment for it, and one simply has to use formula milk via bottles. The important thing is not to feel distressed, or that you have somehow failed. Your baby will thrive on formula, as millions already have.

Notwithittoday · 24/02/2022 21:00

As above hypoplasia. I have it. You can have different degrees of it. I had some glandular tissue in one breast but not enough for a full supply

I have breast hypoplasia and met a few other women with it. Always knew my boobs were odd, but it was only until I struggled to breastfeed that a lactation consultant told me what was up.

It’s not an all or nothing (tho mine is quite severe) - can range from no milk production at all to some.

Because I had no leakage, no milk?…
No I didn’t try breastfeeding as it just wasn’t something I wanted to do anyways I was happy formula feeding my LO from the beginning ☺️ But I was told by my midwife and dr and friends who have had babies that did try breastfeeding either straight to formula that my breasts will become larger and solid, hot as well and I’ll leak colostrum and if I want to collect that I can so I was going to do that but nothing ever came in, my breasts never became larger, solid or ever leaked a tiny bit, never got painful just nothing in the slightest and I haven’t really questioned it until now just to see if any other mothers had this too? If it’s a common thing? Just never happened to friends that have had babies that didn’t try breastfeeding at all too straight to bottle still had colostrum and leaked for at least 2 weeks post birth..
thanks for the answers!

Breastfeeding works by supply and demand. If a woman decides to breastfeed they should be offering baby breast from birth on demand. If you dont offer milk it wont tell your body to produce hence why you only felt slight discomfort as baby wasnt latching to tell your body to make more

stellaaaa23 · 24/02/2022 23:27

I didn’t breast feed at all, I didn’t even try with my baby I went straight onto formula, I’m just saying people I know that went straight onto formula and didn’t breastfeed at all still had a ‘supply’ coming in where as I had nothing at all not even colostrum, these women didn’t express nothing didn’t try breastfeeding also from birth but still has colostrum and also their breast became larger and solid and that didn’t happen to me at all is what Im trying to explain, just wondering if that’s what’s happened to anyone else because I haven’t heard of it even if my baby went straight to formula.

It might be "supply and demand" but for most women, even if ( like me) they never had their boob near their baby and fed by formula exclusively, you would still have colostrum and your boobs would still fill up with milk. The amount of milk goes by supply and demand, but after you've given birth it's normal to start producing it, whether there is demand or not. OP just never even had that first supply.

Also had nothing at all, my mam had told me she never but put us on formula straight away. I tried to breastfeed for about a week, the midwives had me on the double pump in hospital but nothing ever happened

Imonlyhereforthehandwringing · 25/02/2022 00:51

@addictedtotheflats even if a woman never breastfeeds, there is still usually a stage when the milk 'comes in'. I didn't BF either of my kids. I leaked colostrum through both pregnancies. Then after having both babies, I had a few days of rock hard boobs that leaked.

WhatNoRaisins · 25/02/2022 02:50

That's probably less unusual. I didn't get any breast changes with my first until day 4 so if I'd gone straight to formula would most likely have had this experience too

Nat6999 · 25/02/2022 03:02

I didn't have any milk at all. I had an emcs, massive pph & was in high dependency for 3 days due to hellp syndrome. The midwives kept on trying to get ds to feed but I was too drugged up to do it & when I came out of my drugged up state I told them I was planning to ff. It never really bothered me.

stellaaaa23 · 25/02/2022 09:11

Thanks for your stories ladies, I honestly hadn’t given it much thought but then it just had me thinking! It’s never bothered me as I wasn’t going to breast feed anyway right when I found out I was pregnant I always said I was going to formula feed.
@Nat6999 could I ask what emcs and pph is please? (Sorry if I’m sounding stupid) ahh I’m sorry you went through all that!
