4 month old hasn't rolled

Just wondering how old your baby's were when they started rolling? She rolled onto her side once but hasn't done it since. How can I encourage her to roll?

About 8/9 months! She had no interest in it but was an early sitter instead.

Bakewelltart987 · 24/02/2022 15:34

About 5 months. Put baby on tummy I think its easier for them to learn when on tummy most babies don't like being on tummy so will move about trying turn. Or lay them on back put a soft toy to the side but in reach they will try moving to get it.

GiraffeInTheWild · 24/02/2022 15:47

Just under 5 months. They're all on their own timeline though (which is what I keep telling myself when I get stressed about the next milestone), so I wouldn't worry about it.

My elder son could sit and crawl before he could roll over.
Second one rolled at 11 weeks. That was a nuisance as I was used to Ds1 staying where you'd left him!

If nothing else is amiss, I wouldn't worry yet

MirandaWest · 24/02/2022 15:54

I think DS rolled about 4 or 5 months.

DD didn't roll until about 10 or 11 months.

Both walked at 15 months.

They're now 18 and 16 and haven't seen them roll for a while although I assume they can!

Wasthathailorsnow · 24/02/2022 15:55

6 months DC1 and 5 months DC2. Both rolled a few times within about a week and then didn't bother again until another few months later when they both started cruising furniture. Neither crawled either. DC1 walked by 11.5 months independently and DC2 looks to be taking similar path. Neither bum shuffled either. Just went for sitting, to wanting to bear weight and walk with hands held, to cruising furniture and then walking.
Small children are bizarre in how much variation there is on how they physically develop!

AfterGlow87 · 24/02/2022 15:55

My baby was 7.5 months rolling back to front and only sat completely unassisted (for more than 10 mins) at 9 months old. Physio confirmed nothing wrong, he’s just a big tall baby that didn’t read the handbook 😅 But I did encourage him to roll by doing plenty of tummy time and gently rotating his hips onto his aide, then letting him do the rest. But the physio said that unrestricted floor time is the best you can do

Twizbe · 24/02/2022 15:55

All these things babies do in their own time. Sometimes they do something once, tick it off their list, and then don't do it again for ages.

I don't remember when mine rolled, but they were both quite lazy movers and didn't crawl until 11months.

Baby will get there, don't worry about it.

Chely · 24/02/2022 16:33

No biggie, they all get there eventually.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 24/02/2022 16:35

Can you roll? Do you remember when you first did it? Eeeexactly Wink.

DPotter · 24/02/2022 16:44

Please remember - you've read the baby development books but the baby hasn't. She will roll, crawl, babble, sleep all night, walk, etc when she's ready and not before.

As for encouraging - just leave her on the floor every now and again. Don't try and make her roll. She will be fine

fighoney · 24/02/2022 17:34

I don't think you can't really teach babies this sort of thing. They will do it when they are ready/interested. All you do is provide her with opportunities to practice; ie put her down on the floor to play occasionally with some toys she has to stretch for.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 24/02/2022 18:00

11 weeks and it was an absolute PITA as he could only roll one way and not back again and he used to get SO frustrated.

Birchtree4 · 24/02/2022 18:11

5 and half month old has only rolled onto front once and hasn't done front to back (hates tummy time)

Mrsmch123 · 24/02/2022 18:59

My boy was 6 months when he rolled belly to back purely because he hated tummy time😂then he was almost 8 months when he done back to belly. He could sit before he could roll.
In terms of helping lots of floor play even on back. Encourage her to grab at her feet as this encourages rolling. She will naturally start going to the side while holding them. Then she will probably start doing a c shape to see behind her. Once she has this put a toy just over to the side of her head, she will start to reach and roll. Once my boy done it once there was no stopping him. Not he rolls like he's being doing it all his life with no effort😂and it's only been 2 weeks.

jupitermars1345 · 24/02/2022 19:02

8 months back to front
8.5 months now and still won't go front to back 😂

Guineapiggiesmalls · 24/02/2022 19:03

Five months. Once. Then she never did it again.

Didn’t crawl til she was 11 months and then walked at 15/16 months and hasn’t looked back.

raspberryjamchicken · 24/02/2022 19:06

Neither of mine rolled at all as babies. Both perfectly normal at ages 12 and 9.

michelada · 24/02/2022 19:18

Mine was a bit over 7 months

ChirpyChirp · 24/02/2022 19:21

Neither of my sons rolled as babies. They can roll now aged 12 and 9 Grin

Chocoqueen · 24/02/2022 19:22

DD is 6 months and has rolled front to back about 8 times in total - the first time being at 3 1/2 months, never back to front, although does roll onto her side from her back. On the other hand she was sitting independently at 5 months and can swivel herself round on her front, back and sitting so I'm not too worried - I just figure she isn't fussed about rolling 😆😆

Phormiumjester · 24/02/2022 19:46

I've just had to check that he can now! He can. He's 11. He thinks I'm insane Grin

shivawn · 25/02/2022 00:29

Mine is 17 weeks and is rolling from front to back. No signs of going back to front yet.

Sausagesausagesausage · 25/02/2022 06:55

Dead on 4mo for DC1 who then instantly learnt to do multiple ones across the room. That was the last time I sat down for any length of time.

6mo for DC2. Didn't show any interest in moving until one day he just flipped over.

guiltynetter · 25/02/2022 07:00

My DD never rolled! My Ds did it at 5 months and i remember being so surprised as I wasn't used to it
