6-9 month summer outerwear? Necessary?

Hello - FTM here and DD will be in 6-9m sizes in the summer. Do I need to get her any outerwear? I have been carrying her in baby carrier when out so far so not thought much about it apart from hats and booties. She might be starting to crawl? So maybe just robust enough bottoms for when in the garden? If it starts to rain I imagine at that age I'd still just pick her up and put her in carrier under my raincoat... therefore I maybe don't need to buy her a coat or waterproof at this age? What would you do?

I'd wait until summer and see.

RedWingBoots · 23/02/2022 12:03

Agree with the PP.

Wait until summer as you have no idea what the weather will be like.

If you are lucky someone may give you their baby's 6-9 month summer clothes they have grown out off. Otherwise just buy things as needed from somewhere like a supermarket or Primark.

RedWingBoots · 23/02/2022 12:05

Also you may find your baby may be smaller or larger than 6-9 months clothing ranges in summer.

My DD was small for the first 3 months then had a growth spurt so she wore 4-6 month clothes for about 3 weeks.

Your baby may or may not be in that age by summer, you have no idea what the weather will be like, wait and see. When DTs were that age we had a heatwave for the whole summer and they didn't wear much at all apart from short sleeved vests.

You don’t know that. Don’t buy loads of stuff now.

DS1 was ping but average weight so was in smaller sizes e.g. 0-3m (footless) at 4 months and so on and DS2 is fucking huge so is in 9-12m now he’s 5 months. All of DS1s 9-12 was summer clothes so it’s February Soooo I have to buy more.

Just wait.

Caspianberg · 23/02/2022 12:17

Yes I wouldn’t buy now. My May baby, was then in 6 months clothing by the summer ie at 2-3 months old.

At that age, in summer, I wouldn’t buy a cot or rain stuff. They will be sitting or crawling age mainly. A thicker cardigan and some socks, with thin hat plenty if it’s colder than usual. And blanket as needed out and about.

Violetmo0n · 23/02/2022 12:21

Wait and see for what size she is, but I would say a cardigan, a thicker cardigan, a jacket incase rains, thinner hat and socks.

drspouse · 23/02/2022 13:21

It's worth having a raincoat for trips to the park and sitting in the swing, ducks, rolling around on the grass...

Zolla · 23/02/2022 13:36

I’d wait & see her size but I def had outwear for both DDs who were both in 3-6 months over the summer months. Couple chunky knit cardigan/jacket type things. A little zippy hoody. I had a second hand lightweight coat that was waterproof-ish for the odd shower. And obviously a sun hat!

In the rare event we get some decent weather in the UK, sometimes it’s handy to have a thin cardigan to cover up exposed skin if you are in the park & your little one is crawling. You won’t keep them in the shade for long 😂

If they are 6 months old and it’s been raining, you just don’t put them on the grass outside. They don’t mind or know at that age. Most would be on a picnic blanket anyway if damp.

You might not put them there... but if they are crawling they might end up there.
I remember meeting a pair of twins when my older one was this age, and one of the twins was a bum-shuffler. Gosh she could move, and the leggings she was in must have lasted 5 minutes.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 23/02/2022 18:28

She will probably be crawling and if anything like my children walking by 9 months but they are also very tall and are always in clothes sizes away ahead of their ages.

Mine wasn't. Mine was an early talker instead.

I was hoping she would take after the easier nephews and nieces in my family who didn't walk or talk early as it all ends up the same in the end.

Foxbadgerowl · 24/02/2022 23:41

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I got more of a sense now about how to approach it and my first instinct was probably right that she won't need a specific coat and I can always wait and see.

My initial thought was a fleece if in the UK as are likely to get all the weather conditions in one day.

When they are ready fir parks, playing the garden etc... a puddlesuit. Stops their clothes getting damp if the ground is damp.

CheshireChat · 24/02/2022 23:50

This isn't addressed to the OP, but I really wish people would bloody wrap up their babies when it's outside like today- if you're wrapped up in a bloody thick coat and scarf, there's no excuse for a little one to be in tights and a thin top Angry.

I agree completely, an unlined puddlesuit can rescue most outfits in most situations 😂 you're probably safe to get a couple of sunhats in OP as you know you'll likely need them at some point even if you end up playing the hat on, hat off game like me all summer 😬 luckily my eldest has grown out of that and enjoys a hat now. Globes, not so much still.
Foxbadgerowl · 26/02/2022 00:33

Thanks I'll consider a puddle suit!

We get a couple of proper hot weeks a year, and the rest of summer is generally meh. What do you wear the majority of the time in summer? Babies will generally need one more layer than you.

We didn't bother with the rain Mac, but I had a couple of zipup hoodies of various thickness, and an unlined coat with a hood
