What size Terries?

DS (age 2.2) is in MotherEase Multifit nappies (the ones with the velcro fastenings) which I love. As I'm washing anyway I want to put DC2 (due at the end of the month) into reusables as soon as we come home from hospital but the ME ones are rather bulky for newborns and DS didn't go into them till he was 10 weeks old so I was thinking about getting some terries.

However, now I'm confused about what size terry to get. Earthlets have 40cm square ones and 50cm square ones. I was thinking about getting the 50cm ones so that there's a bit more room for growth as I'm also hoping that DS won't be in his for all that much longer (well, 6 months or so) during the day and that would give me a bit more scope for having two sets on the go.

However, I'd be really grateful for guidance and experience of others. Is this a sensible way of going on?

I started with normal 60 cm ones but ds2 was 9 lb 5 oz at birth and so he filled them out quite well . If I was doing it all again with another newborn, I might be tempted to try the 50 cm ones to see if they were a bit slimmer. The advantage of the 60 cm ones is that when they are folded in the Jo fold (Nappy Lady website) they are comparable absorbancy wise to an unbleached tots bots, so quite thirsty.

DS was 7lb and I'm hoping that this one won't be much bigger as I'm only 5' and usually quite slim! It looked like I could do the Jo fold with the 50s as well, but am I right?

Possibly, but from memory it might not have enough width around the hips. Best thing to do would be to buy one to try .

Don't forget you can use muslins for a newborn's nappies too. Absorbancy early on isn't usually the main issue early on as they poo so often they never get chance to get too wet before they need a change. If you are using a rikki wrap or similar you should be ok with a pad folded muslin or you can fold as you would a terry and nippa.

I've bought some 50cm squares from Babeco for my newborn due next year to fill the gap until he fits into his bamboozles at about 10lbs. Expecting him to be about 7lbs. I wouldn't bother with 40cm terries tbh, most I know who have used them found them way too small very early on. I know lots of poeple who have gone straight to 60cm - I think it depends on the nappy you use. My 60cm Little Ewes would be very bulky on a newborn I think but the thinner mothercare ones would probably be fine.

i think the mothercare terries would be fine also i use them in the triple fold and love them they are alot slimmer than a tots bots and they are not stiff and u can adjust them loads and for £9.99 for 6 u can't really go wrong if u don't like them u can always use them as dribble cloths in the cot or pram and bibs for mucky bottles lol once thay have been on a 90 wash
