Baby seems to hate cot?!

Hi,
Not sure if anyone has had a similar experience at all but just looking for some tips!
We have an almost 4 week old and she sleeps extremely well in her Moses basket which we've had in the living room, and for the last week and a half I've slept on the sofa with her in the Moses basket, and most nights we've had 4.5/ 5 hours sleep. Last night I tried to bite the bullet and sleep in the bedroom with her in her bedside crib but she wouldn't settle so I ended up in the living room with her again. Tonight I've moved the Moses basket into the bedroom and she seems to be sleeping ok so far (much better than last night anyway). Obviously I'm conscious that she will soon outgrow the Moses basket so need to get her sleeping in the bedside crib sooner rather than later so if anyone has any tips it would be greatly appreciated!

We had the exact same thing (including sleeping in the living room) - we started putting the Moses basket bassinet in the cot in our room to get her used to the new location. Then every week or so we would try her in the cot with the Moses basket set up next to it just in case. About 7 weeks she finally accepted it and Moses basket went up in the loft!

Brill, that was going to be the next step in my plan! Glad to hear it works. Also happy to report baby slept from midnight until 8am and only woke for two feeds and settled down straight after so moving in the right direction.

I had a similar thing with my DDs. I had an old pram I was using as a Moses basket. DD1 hated it. Before DD2 was born we added a thicker mattress/pad to it and DD2 was fine. So it may be that the mattress in the cot is just not as comfortable. Maybe a piece of foam or eggshell foam on top of the mattress in the cot would be more cosy? Some people also recommend warming the cot with a hot water bottle because putting baby into a cold cot straight from your arms can be a cold shock.

Babies like baskets (well, mine didn’t, but in theory) because they’re cosy and the walls cocoon them: they’ve just come from the womb where they’re all tucked in and snug and held by you, a basket keeps them in that zone, or close enough. But bedside cribs and cots are massive scary spaces: where’s Mum?!

SIL also had luck with the “basket inside the crib” plan. Do the sides of your crib come down? I used to only get DD to settle in there if I was half inside it to, curled around her. Eventually gave up and put her directly in bed with me and used the crib for my water bottle, Kindle, nappies and 3am flapjacks…

Yes I thought that about the mattress but tbh I think they are the exact same material as I got them both from Asda (both Moses basket and bedside crib were secondhand from family). I'll try the water bottle though, very good point thank you.

See lots of people had said to me a Moses basket was a waste of money as babies hated them because they can touch the sides and wake themselves up. Glad I didn't listen Grin yes they do come down so might try that if the basket in crib doesn't work. Although a storage space for middle of the night snacks does sound tempting!

Have you tried swaddling her? The tommee tippee grobags are excellent as you can secure their arms in.

In my (limited) experience everything is a phase.
