Dropping head on tummy time

My little one is 6 months, can hold her up like when I’m holding her and sitting etc. But on the tummy it’s like she arches her back to get her head up rather than using her stomach muscles / arms and her head will just suddenly drop to the floor, like she chins it as if she’s just gone really weak and can’t support it.

Anyone had similar? Is it okay?

Following as my 5 and half month old is exactly the same- doesn't seem to have worked out how to weight bear on hands!

Namechangegardens · 19/02/2022 20:12

(I'm not worried though, I think both our babies are most likely totally fine and just not hitting milestones at same time as other babies)

Tummy time is the work of the devil. Never seen a baby yet who likes it. Imagine being stuck face down in the floor and unable to move! Wink How long can you hold your body weight up from the floor without faceplanting?
I know it’s supposed to be good for them but I found it quite stressful to watch!
I’m fairly sure your baby is totally fine.

My DD did this. She ALWAYS hated tuy time and didn't push up on her arms till 8 months, and could get herself to sitting till 10 months. She never crawled. But But was walking at 11 months and she's very coordinated now. I was really worried because if read how important crawling was for developing open hand, oppositional movement etc. At 5, she's totally normal. She can ride her bike, loves dancing etc. Handwriting is just fine.

I totally get that you should give your child opportunities to practice skills on their tummy. But some do things in a different order! If your child is totally miserable and hurting themselves, i doubt theyre gaining much from it. They can strengthen musvles from sitting and pulling up, or you can help them on their tummy by using a cushion or a splat mat so it doesnt hurt if they faceplant.

Yeah, it was more the fact she just face plants the floor with a bang…. Shouldn’t she be lowering her face gently. She doesn’t it multiple times. Head up. Face plant. Head up. Face plant!

She’s 6 months old, she has very little coordination or upper body strength. She’s not capable of lowering herself gently.
She’ll keep faceplanting till she’s so frustrated she screams and then You pick her up! That’s how tummy time works until they can roll.

Hi, can I just ask how you got on? Did you see any improvement or did you contact your doctor for advice etc.
what age was she when she stopped doing it?
I'm currently having the same issue with my baby

Namechangegardens · 26/09/2025 09:41

Hi @Bumblebee60 - I got a notification for this as I had posted upthread saying i had the same concern. I have absolutely no recollection of having this issue and have a thriving 4 year old now so am assuming it must have sorted itself out at some point! I definitely didn't get advice for it.

Hi, I’m the OP.

my little one is now 4 years old and is ace at gymnastics and swimming. So no worries at all.

i had post natal depression which probably explains some of my crazy posts!!

I’m sure you’re little one is fine and is just trying their hardest at Tummy Time
