What to do/where to go with 17 month old in afternoons?

We go to baby classes most mornings but the afternoons until bed time feel very very long. We play games at home but he gets bored very quickly. Any ideas on places we can go or things to do at home besides reading? Is soft play weekly spoiling him?

Park? Library? Playdate?

Can he walk? We usually go for a walk/to the park in the afternoon. My DS is also 17 months, sometimes just pop to the shops as well. Soft play weekly isn’t spoiling him if you can afford it and that’s what you want to do! Cx

Soft play breaks the day up massively!
Park
Feeding ducks
Walk in park
Wrapped up and out with toys in garden
Cafe
Walk round shops
Library
Bus ride

Painting
Rice, pasta and water in pans with utensils
Mid afternoon bath
Baking
Play dough

On home and not nursery days. We usually try get out in the morning around 9.30:
Trampolining, soft play, park, walk, cafe, baby class, sensory or feed the ducks in the morning. Depending on the weather, or what we’ve done the previous days. Often meet friends for a walk and then lunch once a week.
Followed by lunch (if we’ve not had it out) then afternoon nap.
In the afternoon we play at home, in the garden, or go for a walk / to the shops before tea. At home painting, drawing, duplo, baking, sand table.

Go to softplay as much as you need to.

Swimming is great.

Or just getting out the house and giving him something new/different to look at. Walk to the shops, feed the ducks, go to the post office, the library, meet a friend, go on a bus/train (even if you're not actually going anywhere), go to the airport and watch the planes, a building site to watch the diggers etc.

Some of these are easier once your dc us walking.

Play in the garden
Walk
Park
Feed ducks
The beach
Jump in puddles if there are any
Arrange a play date at yours where the parent of other child stays this doesn't have to be for long or meet in park.
Are you able to pop in and see your parents for an hour.
Library
Swimming
Walk in the woods or countryside
If you can afford it get membership to local zoo or adventure park. Under 2 are generally free.

At 17 months they don’t understand that you are doing something purely for their enjoyment. Their day is just a series of events that happen, some good, some bad, some indifferent. So no I don’t think you can spoil them with a regular activity. I do agree that afternoons can feel long, especially when they drop to one nap! Agree with PPs that it’s easier ++ when they are walking.

We tend to do a ‘big thing’ (usually toddler group midweek, or city farm/swimming/soft play at weekends) in the morning then something smaller in the afternoon. Usually either a trip to the local swings or a ride on the bus to town if the weather is okay. If it’s really wet, we might go to the supermarket +/- a cafe. If grandparents are around we’ll visit them. Sometimes he just potters round the car park outside our house (no back garden). We don’t last much more than an hour playing in the house…
