Newborn sleeping longer stretches - milk supply?

My 4 week old ds did a 5 1/2hr stint last night compared to his usual 3 or 4. I was grateful for the extra sleep but also concerned about milk supply with him being so young. He is quite a big baby - probably around 11lbs now. No idea whether he will keep up this pattern or not but does anyone know whether my milk supply would be affected by not feeding more regularly at night? Thanks!

He feeds regularly during the day and cluster feeds in the evenings.

I wouldn't worry about having a longer stint at night. Your milk will adjust to what your baby needs. If they're feeding regularly in the day, your supply will be maintained. As long as you're not uncomfortably engorged in the night, I wouldn't worry. If you are uncomfortable, just express a bit in the sink to relieve the discomfort.

Enjoy the sleep xx

I've always been told that once a newborn is back to birth weight (and assuming no other health concerns), you can leave them for a 6 hour stint overnight. I wouldn't worry at all with what you've said. Just remember, baby sleep changes all the time so you may go back to 2 hourly wakes up next week (or you may be lucky and have a good sleeper on your hands!).

No need to worry. The supply building thing is only a problem if you use formula or expressed milk in the first seven weeks. He will make up for it while awake.

It's absolutely normal for a newborn to be able to have one longer stretch of sleep in a 24 hour period. If it happens at night, you've hit the jackpot!

As others have said, you don't need to worry about your supply at all. All that lovely cluster feeding in the evening will put in the demand and ensure your supply is strong. Supply and demand works on a day to day basis too. If your baby started to wake more, it would put the demand in at once for the following day. Supply peaks and troughs to meet the babys needs. It changes regularly, with growth spurts etc. You sound like you're doing everything right and it's working well with your lovely big baby!

Thanks everyone. We were back to every 3 hours last night Grin but if it ever happens again at least I will enjoy it and not worry!
