Breastfeeders- is this normal

DS is 10 weeks and since about 3/4 weeks every so often he has a poop that looks basically like paste. The others are that orangey/ yellow watery seedy poo but this is yellow and quite thick. He’s exclusively breastfed but he has been ill with bronchilloitis and is still quite snotty don’t know if that’s related or not?

HV didn’t know and said monitor, ive tried to post to FB bf groups but the posts haven’t been approved so I turn to you lovely lot!

I can post a pic if it helps, just want to know if it’s normal or if it looks off and I can take him to the GP

Sounds within the realms of normal to me. Is baby doing plenty of wet nappies on those days as perhaps baby hasn’t had as much milk so she’s a bit constipated?

Kanfuzed123 · 11/02/2022 20:42

Same amount of wets, and the same amount of feeds roughly. It’s odd because one poo will the normal bf ultra runny and the next will be the paste texture almost like FF texture.

I called the national bf helpline and they said he could be swallowing mucus and it’s making it thicker? But I don’t know. GP wouldn’t know, HV is useless

I personally wouldn’t be worried by it. Their poo isn’t always exactly the same, like they said mucus could maybe affect it aswell as your own diet. If it’s a yellowy colour and not so thick that she’s constipated it sounds normal especially if no other symptoms like blood in the poo or tummy ache or vomiting or anything that might make you be concerned about it. I was worried my LO had very watery poo for the first few months and the GP asked those sorts of questions and wasn’t worried at all. But you know your baby best and if you’re worried I’d call the GP but like I said, if it’s literally just slightly thicker than normal it doesn’t sound concerning.

Is it possible that when it's thicker it's just taken a bit longer for you to notice the poo and the nappy has absorbed most of the liquid?

I’ve got them fresh lol, it’s just more paste like and not dried out.

He’s quite a sicky boy too but he’s a happy chucker and not distressed with it. I don’t know, I never saw anything like it with my daughter

4 breastfed babies and this happened with every one of them op! The consistency just changed and I never noticed a pattern to it... It just came and went. I didn't know if it was related to what I'd been eating or if it were to do with how long the babies had been sucking for, for individual feeds (milk becomes gradually more fatty as a feed goes on). But all perfectly normal.

I hope this reassures you!

Mine does the same too, don’t remember with dc1 or 2 but happens to dc3. She’s happy and thriving so I do t think it’s a bad thing.

This happened with my daughter's too! I checked with a feeding specialist ( who happened to be a nurse living up the road from me!) and she said completely normal. Could depend on the fat in the milk and baby absorbing nutrients to grow etc. No exact reason for it really!
