When LO is in car seat for long-ish journey does that count as inside or outside in terms of clothing?

Sorry silly question! But we are thinking of going to the shops (big event as DD is 3wks old and we are useless newbies!) which are about 40 mins away by car.
Any time we've taken DD out it has never been more than a 5 min journey so she's had on her wee vest and babygro that she wears in the house then a cosy outside suit for going outside. Whenever we get where we're going I take off her hat and warm suit straight away so she doesn't overheat (is this right?).
But if we go in the car for 40 mins should I put her warm suit on or will this bake her?!
And then if we're in and out of shops - what then?
SORRY for stupidity but haven't done this before!!

you could put a cardigan on her instead of the outside suit and wrap a blanket over her carseat!
bump for more experienced moms as my dd summer baby!

you could put her legs in suit, and leave unfastened, then put arms in and do up when you get out.

I would go for a coat, hat and blankets (in the carseat and the pram) rather than an all in one, that way she will be easy to dress/undress if it gets cold/warm. I would just not go overboard with the heating in the car. Oh and pack a cardie in case when you get there it is very hot, we went to shops yesterday and it was boiling! I can remember how you feel it's a very scary thought thinking they are either going to be cold or too hot!

I would go for layers as I used to find that it is warm in the car, cold in the streets, but boiling inside shops at this time of year. That way you can add and take blanket etc as needs be. Good luck with your trip - I am sure you will spend most of the day fighting off admirers with a baby that small!

Put your baby's snow suit on, and in the car, unzip it down the front and take the baies hat of. No blankets, just an unzipped snow suit and a babygro. Take a cardi for when you get there.

Blankets are always good for when you're not sure - you can just fold another layer on or off without waking the baby. Always keep one in the basket of your pushchair!
I've always hated 'snowsuits' for this reason - why keep annoying the baby when you can just add layers on top.

Congratulations on your new DD.

I would treat the car journey as being indoors but since she will probably be asleep I would put her in a cardigan and have a blanket to cover her up with. We don't tend to have our car very warm though as it can make you sleepy to have it too hot so I would be in a light jacket or thick cardi.

I would put her in her outside suit for the shopping but if indoors no hat. Take a blanket for outside but take it off indoors and if it gets really hot undo the zip of the suit thing. I never bothered taking the coat off my two boys even though DS2 is very hot blooded and always warm - I just undid it. That being said I am not the sort of person to wander around shopping centres without a jacket just because it has a roof over it.

Don't forget that she will be asleep a lot of the time and you do get colder when you are asleep.

I also think I read somewhere once that you should put them in however many layers you are wearing plus one because they get cold quicker and they aren't walking around generating heat which seems like a sensible approach.

Just take different layers and trust your instincts. You will all be fine, I'm sure.

THANK YOU! so frazzled she'll probably be walking by the time we leave the house anyway! But vg to know, thank you.
