Is it worth doing a birthday party for a 2 year old?

And what should I do for it?? My son loves trucks and climbing.

For his 1st birthday I just blew up a load of balloons in the front room and he crawled after them. I get the feeling im going to have to put more effort into this one. Any advice please!

I wouldn't do a big party inviting a load of other kids at this age. I'd save that for later (you'll have years of it!).

At this age for DD I did two separate little gatherings: one with two other two year olds and their mums (from my antenatal group), and another with three grown up friends of ours.

Even at 3 and 4 I kept things low key and DD will be having her first proper party with lots of friends, games, party bags etc. for her 5th.

Thanks! Its a difficult one because I know I should do more than balloons in the living room but I agree that a full on party with party bags is too much at this age

What my kids wanted at 2 and 3 was a helium balloon and cake. Do a party if you will enjoy it chatting to adults etc. Otherwise a living room if balloons sounds great, with some cake thrown in! Plus a trip to somewhere he enjoys, like the playground or swimming pool.

When is it? If it's spring or summer you could invite a couple friends that have a picnic in the park and then a play in the park. Could bring a bubble gun.

Presents, cake, singing happy birthday is absolutely sufficient! Or make it an excuse for a special day out to the zoo, seaside or whatever.

My DD doesn’t even get balloons and still thinks birthdays are exciting.

Most 2 year olds would prefer your undivided attention for a day over you run ragged hosting a big noisy party for lots of people.

We did a trip to a farm & playground type venue and invited her gran, auntie and some cousins (4 adults/ 4 kids). We made up picnic boxes for everyone and took a cake.

Two is very similar to one in that they don't know or care so do whatever makes you happy. For some people that's just presents and stuff at home, some people do a big party, some a small party, some do a day out for the child etc. The important thing to remember is it does not matter to the child at all!

Plan for my son's 2nd birthday is soft play in the morning, home for cake and presents in the afternoon and then go out to dinner. I plan on getting a shit tonne of balloons as he loves them haha

We'll go for a day out on the weekend- no point having a party- he doesn't know what one is yet haha

DS2 just turned two, we had a party at home with grandparents and balloons and cake.

DS1 when he turned two we invited DHs cousins plus their toddler and an NCT mum plus her toddler to ours. Again, there were balloons and cake.

We didn't bother until 3. For two we just did a visit to grandparents with cake/presents

This (although personally I would always add balloons...). My eldest just turned 4 and still got this! Unless you really want to, I wouldn't start doing parties until they ask for one.

My DD will be two this weekend. We're putting up bunting and balloons and in the afternoon grandparents etc will come over for a buffet tea and cake.

We just did birthday cake with grandparents in the garden (summer born). Her third birthday will be very much the same I suspect.

TulipsGarden · 10/02/2022 23:47

We were in lockdown for mine's 2nd birthday, so he just had balloons and a cake and us. He loved it!

Presents and a bit of singing. Bit of cake. Maybe one friend around? Or just family

Don't expect too much either, an hour or two
