7 week old - doesn't sleep during day, only naps in dad's arms

Our 7-8 week old girl doesn't want to sleep at all during the day.
She seems to sleep relatively well in the evening (currently getting at least 1x 5-8 hour stint overnight) - but doesn't want to nap during the day.
The only exception seems to be when Dad is able to take her for a while, she will happily sleep in HIS arms for a while. But not in Mums - which brings its own struggles, especially when dad has to be at work.
Is this a phase? Will it pass?
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to how we can solve this? Or do we just need to be patient?
Thanks in advance.

What have you tried so far with the daytime naps @JoshuaRMelbAus?

becca3210 · 10/02/2022 10:14

Have you got a carrier/wrap? My son would sleep in that as a baby or buggy. Didn't get into a cot routine for naps until older

It is just a phase (much like everything!) but what have you tried for naps?

Around that age DD would only nap in the pram, but thankfully would stay asleep once we got home so wasn't endlessly walking. We then progress to a swing chair which I got for 20 quid from Facebook marketplace and was ace.

Thanks @BunnyRuddington

We've tried various things so far, but with no real success. Sometimes we'll get her to sleep but will only last 30 mins max in the bassinet.

Tried putting her down "drowsy but awake", white noise, walking in the pram (doesn't seem to like the pram bassinet at all at the moment). Getting her to sleep in our arms, then putting her down - only lasts another 5-10 minutes usually.

We'll try to monitor the awake windows and work towards that. Settling her in the bassinet w/ pacifier + shushing has been tried.

We have just been resorting to letting her sleep in our arms - as we're concerned she just isn't getting enough sleep.

Thanks, @becca3210 - I'm hoping to get us a carrier in the next week so hopefully, this will give us another tool. We'll be able to try

Thanks as well @Lockdownmummy - I'm hoping this is just a bit of a phase. We are bang in the middle of the "peak unsettledness at 6-8 weeks" and the weather here in AUS has been particularly hot of late. So hopefully this will pass.

I have a 6 week old - it's tough! This is my second so I can assure you as others have that everything is a phase and this too shall pass!

Things that help
-Carrier naps - we do 2 of these a day. Either that or holding her for naps.
-Swaddling and white noise - we do this for every sleep we try on her own in a sleep space
-Holding her for at least 15 minutes before transferring to bed
-In desperation I used a Sleepyhead/Dockatot in our Snuzpod bassinet for sleep which helped (had leftover from last baby). However these aren't recommended for safe sleep. I then got a Purflo Baby Bed which is certified as a bed rather than a pod and have that in the Snuzpod.
-Keep trying or retrying things that didn't work as they change so much that eventually they usually do work!

5-8 hours overnight is amazing! We just did a 3 hour overnight block which was our longest yet.

It might be worth trying a T-shirt DH has worn as the sheet in her bassinet. The sweatier the better as it will give her a nice, reassuring smell.

We went through something similar with our little boy, from 6-9 weeks he would only sleep on us during the day but would go in his Moses basket at night - would definitely recommend a baby carrier as that’s where our baby slept in the day for those few weeks and it meant we could get some jobs done at the same time! We have an ergo baby carrier which I would definitely recommend! By 10 weeks he started napping in his Moses basket/cot the day and has done since - he’s now 16 weeks :)
