Toddler fell and hit head - am so worried

My 22 month old toddler was sitting on a soft play block in the lounge, which is 25cm high. He fell backwards, his body landed on the playmat but his head then hit the wooden floor behind. He turned onto his front and started crying. He stopped crying after three or four minutes of cuddles and seemed fine if a bit subdued. He later had his lunch and was his usual self, saying words etc. He’s now gone up for his nap. There aren’t any bumps to his head but I’ve read this can actually be worse!!

I’m totally freaking out that he might have really hurt himself and feel physically sick that I didn’t manage to stop this happening or catch him in time. He’s only bumped his head once or twice before as I watch him like a hawk. I’m shaking with worry, please help Sad

I’m constantly terrified of him having a life-altering injury - there are just so many hazards everywhere. It only takes a split second and things can change forever Sad

Try not to worry, you can take him to hospital for a check up and your piece of mind or call 111 for advice if you are worried, is he your only child, you shouldn't be constantly terrified and can only do your best to keep him safe,

He's probably fine, but if you're worried get him checked at a minor injuries unit or a&e.

Separately, do you think you may have anxiety? There's lots of support available that might really help.

Thanks. Do you think he needs to go to hospital after an incident like that?

Totally understand how you feel - it's terrifying! Our second DC has hypermobile joints and is really wobbly - he only started walking when he was nearly 2 and the whole following year was constantly falling over and often had bumps on his head. It was awful. If he fell from a height or had nausea, sickness, dizziness, unconsciousness etc I would obviously take him to A&E. Unfortunately this age is a nightmare for them hurting themselves and most people have to send their DC to nursery/childminder etc so it can be tough.

The thickest part of the skull is the ridge at the back.
If they aren't being sick or dizzy probably all right.

I’m not a doctor but I wouldn’t worry if this happened to one of mine. I definitely wouldn’t take them to A&E but as you are so worried might you feel better if you spoke to the GP surgery or 111. I also think you should see your GP separately to talk about your anxiety. Flowers

I think talking to a health professional in person will help you, why don't you call 111.

Bear2014 · 09/02/2022 14:09

In my experience if you call 111 about almost anything relating to a young child they will tell you to go to A&E. So if you're going to do that, maybe just go.
