Does anyone have any advice with cloth nappies?

I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and definitely want to go with cloth nappies. I think we will have to wait till baby arrives and then try a few different sample packs but am really interested to hear what worked for other people?

The all in ones obviously look the easiest, but this is my first and I would like them to last two children and have read these don’t last as long because the cover gets washed more?

So I would probably be leaning more towards the all in twos but I then worry about them being too bulky?

The tots bots seem to do just a liner and wrap for day use which I imagine to be more slim and then a full nappy for night. But is this enough?

Basically please tell me your experiences and any brands you would recommend! 🙂 thank you 😁

We can see this thread is quite old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for sustainable nappies, we’ve recently updated our best reusable nappies page with plenty of great options tried and tested by MNHQ, plus advice on choosing the best one for your baby. We hope you find it useful.

Join cloth bum mums on FB for lots of advice, and have a read of The Nappy Lady website too. I like two part systems for reliability with some pockets for out and about. I have long babies, 10lb and 8lb so skinny legs weren't an issue for nappy fitting!

I'm using the cloth nappies I had for DC1 now for DC2 (8 months). DC1 potty trained at 2.5yrs so they got alot of use.

Tots Bots Bamboozle stretchies are bomb proof and in good condition still despite me abusing them by tumble drying alot.

Motherease airflow wraps are expensive but worth it as they don't leak. The bindings have seen better days but they work better than anything else. I had Rikki wraps too but the velcro rubbed their tummies at times. You do need different sizes as they grow but they re sell well on FB groups.

Little lambs sized pocket nappies are absolutely amazing. Bought some for second baby to make changing when out quicker. Wish I'd had the money for them first time, very few poo leaks despite them being pockets.

Wool wraps are great for night time. I use a disposable at night for DC2 (convenience) but loved the wool for DC1 who fed so much at night everything else leaked. Will use the wool wraps soon I imagine.

Absolutely loved old fashioned cotton terries for DC1 with ME airflows over the top from about 10-12 months. They are very absorbant, you can change the fold as your child changes shape, you can wash and dry them however you want and they are so cheap.

I find all in one's bulky, not absorbant enough, and annoying to fit right so have sold on ones I've tried.

Any cloth is far superior to disposables in containing poo which is my main motivation second time around. I hate cleaning up poo explosions from disposables.

If I were to start over I would buy what I have now, some good pockets, but mainly a 2 part system. Reusable wipes are brilliant, they clean up poo alot quicker and mine will be used till they fall to bits for cleaning.

Don't get sucked into the cute prints...it's a poo receptacle after all Grin

We’ve always used a 2 part system and it worked really well.

We used folded muslin squares and a few newborn sized wraps from birth and then moved to folded terry towels when DC was about 3 months old.

I like the little lambs wraps the best but don’t particularly like their ‘nappy’ inside bit, a plain old terry towel is much more absorbent.

I like how cheap a two part system is! We only have about 4/5 wraps in each size and about 20 towels. We had less newborn wraps because I knew we wouldn’t use them for long.

It’s all really easy to wash and dry and I like that it’s also less plastic than the all in one/pocket nappys.

Also recommend a two system.
I found Bambino Mio worked really well.
I liked it for the fact they dry quicker than all in one's which is a massive plus and not at all a strain to put a piece of cloth in the outer, doesn't take long at all and can prepare in advance.

Also OP little lambs have some of their wraps 1/2 price in a sale at the moment. They’re onto £5.50!! I’ve been stocking up Grin

Def second FB groups as a resource. I think what works varies for different people though - I mostly use AIOs or AI2s during the day - a mix of close popins, little lovebum quickdrys, and bells bumz hybrids. I used to use 2 partner systems at night only - too bulky during the day! - Ella's house bumhuggers and motherease airflow wraps. I didn't get on with bamboozles. But I've paused on cloth overnight for the moment - wiggly roll-y baby makes getting 2 pieces on frustrating. And I am not a flats/terries person. We've been doing cloth during the day solidly for over a year now though. Recommend hiring a kit if you can though to try some different things out. Try the cloth nappy nerds FB group - I think they have kits to hire if you don't have a local nappy library. Also check if your council has an incentive voucher scheme

jojanna · 10/02/2022 23:01

Also, "birth to potty" sizes prob won't fit til baby is 8 weeks old. Newborn sizes exist, but... Unless you can hire a newborn kit I'd wait for baby to grow into btp

We use the tots bots range

Teenyfits we bought as everyone said all in one would be huge, Ds was nearly 9lb so they only fitted a few weeks. Could have gone straight into all in one

Easyfits - I love these. We use daily.

Bamboozles - we use the two part at night. They are great. Can add insert if baby wets even more. But I wouldn’t want to use in the day, they take longer to dry than the easyfits, and are bulkier. We have 4 and that’s min needed to wear two nights, wash and dry, and reuse.

We don’t use the tumble dryer on ours. They dry fine outside and inside on rack in winter.

Caspianberg · 11/02/2022 16:10

Mean to say, all out tots bots are still like new condition, after almost 2 years use. They will def be fine to reuse for another

Flittingaboutagain · 11/02/2022 16:11

I love my Bambino Mio two part system with a velcro wrap, white nappy and bamboo liner. The sun gets out all the stains even in Winter. We have no leaks at all. I bought them all second hand on eBay in case we didn't get on with this particular brand.

MoltenLasagne · 11/02/2022 16:17

I'd recommend the hire kits to work out what works best for you and more importantly, what fits your baby.

I'm another that prefers the two parters - motherease airflows are truly bombproof. Whenever we use disposables we still use the wrap over the top.

Best tip we got was for washing,
: do your pre-wash in the evening then timer set your long wash to come on at 3am or something so it's done ready to hang out in the morning.

Choppies · 11/02/2022 16:18

Little Lamb are great for preventing leaks.

Only thing is they take ages to dry so unless you are tumble drying then I would avoid.

Bambino moo all in ones dry so much quicker and are super handy and really cute. They do leak a bit more and won’t last as long but they are my winners

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 11/02/2022 16:18

Two part systems are best.

All in ones take forever to dry after washing.

Caspianberg · 11/02/2022 16:18

I don’t do any pre wash. Just flush main stuff at time in loo. Then normal 60 degree wash. They all look and smell clean. I use various 60 degree 1.5-3hr washes, literally depending on how much time I have

AegonT · 11/02/2022 22:29

We use Bumgenius pockets in the day but they haven't lasted 2 kids; we had to replace them as the elastic went. We also had to get (cheap) bamboo inserts as just the microfibre they came with wasn't enough and they leaked. They're quick to change and dry quickly.

We use a two part system at night (Bamboozles with Motherease wraps) and they still look new, last 12 hours and never ever leak. I can see the appeal of using them all the time but they are mostly bamboo so take quite a while to dry.

This time we bought newborn nappies (Bimbles with Motherease wraps) - they lasted 4 months.

Cloth wipes are great, we just wet them under the tap as needed, they work way better than disposable wet wipes.

We use disposables when away overnight or on holiday and have a stack in the car in case we get though the three cloth nappies we have in the bag (occasionally happened in the early weeks).

Nappy Lady advice is great especially regarding washing.
