Baby keeps scratching eczema

My son has a little patch of what the doctor believes is eczema (over the phone, photo consultation) we were prescribed hydrocortisone which worked absolute wonders… for about a week.
Then he started scratching at the patch in his sleep. We’ve tried everything, cutting his nails almost daily, always having his hands covered or in mits at night. He manages to get the mits off or poke fingers out the built in mits on his onesies. Every time I see him touch the patch on his face I stop him but he’s only 7 months so doesn’t understand. We can’t use the cream now because the skin is broken. We put sudocrem or e45 moisturiser on as often as possible. I’m calling doctors again tomorrow, but don’t really know what else can be advised 😔
Does anyone have an advise? It’s breaking my heart as he’s properly making himself bleed with it.

Is he old enough to have antihistamine to help ease the itching? Might be worth asking a pharmacist or calling the GP...

I recommend scratch sleeves for bedtime

Also I don't think sudocrem will help. Think you need an emollient such as hydromol to help repair his skin barrier.

Please don't use E45, it burns on broken skin. Hydrocortisone absolutely can be used on broken skin, this will help to heal the eczema. Use it as prescribed each day and continue it for several days after the skin has fully healed.

Sudocrem and e45 are awful for eczema. Please get a proper emollient.

Scratch sleeves PJ tops are great, not the waistcoats thing the actual top. Dr should give you some advice but generally hydrocortisone and Aveeno baby dermexa cream seem to work...I have 3 eczema prone children and have trawled forums for advice and this seems to be the general consensus x

Thanks for the replies. As I’ve said we have hydrocortisone and it was helping but he has recently started scratching. The leaflet that came with the cream says not to use on broken skin.

I’m calling doctors tomorrow so will ask about antihistamine for the itching.
The doctor told me to use e45 as well as the hydrocortisone… I have eczema myself and know from experience that e45 doesn’t do much for it, but following doctors recommendations for my son.

Thank you! I didn’t know about the scratch sleeves tops so will definitely order some now! And will grab some Aveeno while I’m at the pharmacy tomorrow.

Socks might stay on his hands better than scratch mitts? Or even socks on his hands and then the sleep suit with built in mitts on top? My baby always manages to have escapee fingers in the night too, DH calls them Houdini hands Grin

Well yeah... eczema is itchy as fuck. I can't stop myself scratching and I'm 27. Try a hydrocolloid patch?
