1 year old eats SO much!

Not sure whether I just carry on and let him eat what he wants providing it's healthy stuff or I try and limit his portions more?

My 1 year old son can eat so much! He isn't fat, fits in all the right size clothes for his age and the HV is happy with his weight and growth but everyone comments on how much he puts away!

I try to make sure whst he's eating is healthy but still worrying that it's too much even though he's scream his heart out if I gave him smaller amounts!

Today:

Scrambled egg and some brown toast at about 8am.

11 - banana and small yoghurt

1pm - some pasta with tuna and vegetables

He'll probably want some sort of snack between now and tea which I try to keep as things like cucumber/ tomato / carrots / blueberries / raspberries that sort of thing.

Tea he will have whatever we eat.

I'm not really concerned about what he is eating. It's the amount he seems to want. He can easily eat as much meat/veg or whatever we are having for tea as our 8 year old if allowed.

Nursery have commented on how much he likes to eat, they have started giving him two and a half Weetabix in the morning which is more than I'd have if I were having Weetabix!!

Do I restrict this or just keep it how it is providing he's healthy and no one is concerned about his weight?

He is walking already so does get about a lot in the day.

It's not even a good indicator that he's well either. He was very poorly in hospital on oxygen last year and he still wanted to eat!

My son was/is the same. A teen now but everyone always commented. I decided if a healthy weight I wasn't going to worry, just make sure that it was healthy food and high protein that he was eating.

I found he went through cycles, so a few months of serious eating then a growth spurt and slightly less eating (still more than a normal child) and then back to crazy eating.
16 now and has 8 wetabix, with two bananas and 2 pints of milk most mornings. Still not fat, just burns it. not jealous at all

My DS is like this. He is 2.5 now and still in 18-24 month clothes, but you'd never believe it from the amount he eats! I'm not too worried as his dad is the same and isn't overweight. If he starts piling weight on when older I'll deal with it then. I'd far rather this than a picky eater!

Between 1 and 2 mine was like that. During a growth spurt I totalled up that some days he was eating more than 1500 calories. But he was an early walker and he just NEVER STOPPED MOVING so I figured he needed the energy!!! But yes, the volume of food just going in to such a wee person was unreal!! And he was never a chubby baby, trousers always fastened at the smallest they could go and still falling down.

My 1 year old eats a lot (21 months). He too was an early Walker, and spends all day running around. He’s always hungry.

Both of mine were/are like this. Really active babies from the second they could move and appetites to match. DS1 got fussy from about 18mo and lived on air for a period, now 4yo he's eats a good amount (though limited still due to fussiness). He eats a massive breakfast. DS2 can easily shovel down a whole plate of pasta without coming up for air.

He loves his food, and that's a good thing, as what you're giving him all sounds very healthy.

Oh I had one of these! Was amazing! Keep giving what he wants if he isn't too big.

My DS was the same at 1, he could put away more than DH and I, especially at breakfast. We never restricted healthy stuff - he was a humongous blob (had been since birth) so we checked with the GP who said all okay as he wasn’t walking at that stage. At 20 months his portions have generally dramatically reduced and he has become a wee bit picky. He’s also slimmed out a fair bit. He still has phases of being really hungry, which I suspect are linked with growth spurts. I think you should carry on as you are - having a ‘good’ eater makes life so much easier!
