My son just turned one and was on 2 x 8 oz bottles of cow milk a day (one on waking and one before bed) but recently is rejecting his bedtime bottle. Is it too early to drop down to one bottle (I’m aware I should be thinking about moving him from bottle to cups)? During the day he only has water should I be giving milk during the day in a cup too? He started nursery this week and they implied he should have milk during the day too and asked if they could give him some at snack time which I said was fine as I don’t mind them giving him more. They said they didn't want to deprive him which made me feel like I wasn't giving him enough if they thought he was being deprived of milk....and he was having two bottles when he started nursery so he's taking even less now. He has milk in his breakfast and then snacks like cheese and yoghurt to up the calcium intake when he is with me at home. Just worried now I’m not giving him enough!

From age 1 they need around 300/350mls (around 11/12 oz). Milk in cereal and dairy products contain towards that total too. Is it a cup of milk they are offering at nursery?

@dementedpixie

Thanks for your reply.

So he has usually 200ml in the morning bottle, then Probably about 100ml in his cereal at breakfast, he used to have another 150-200ml at night but this has barely been 100ml for the last couple of nights, then whatever is in yoghurts/cheese etc. so sounds like even if he drops the evening bottle he's having enough. Yeah the nursery said they would give him some in cup at snack time which I have no problem with but just made me wonder if I should be doing the same!

I'm pretty sure my 13mo has too much milk. She has a bottle of about 200-220 first thing and last thing, and then usually another bottle of around 150ml in the middle of the day. She's a real pain with eating and drinking water, but loves her milk.

He needs 350mg of calcium a day. This is 3 portions. So one 100ml cup of milk would be one portions. Two small toddler size yogurt or a normal pot of yogurt have 120mg of calcium.

If he is struggling to get enough then you can get fortified cereal and bread and horlicks is forfeited too.
