Constipated toddler - movicol

I’m currently losing my patience with my 21 month old who will not take movicol despite trying a million different cups, syringe etc.

She eats plenty of fruit and veg but always suffered with constipation.

She’s very constipated and going to injure herself soon. Any tips?

Glycerin suppositories are great. They won't cure the problem long-term but will clear out any blocked poo.

LostMySocks · 06/02/2022 14:20

Movicol tastes very bitter. I put it in fruit juice for my son.

Vicky1989x · 06/02/2022 14:20

@AllOfTheDwarves I tried that yesterday and she just strained and pushed it straight back out… 3 times! 🙃

Have you looked into allergies/intolérances?

Vicky1989x · 06/02/2022 14:25

@LostMySocks Thank you, she just watched me put some fruit juice in and now she’s drinking it. I have tried that before and she still wouldn’t but it worked today 🤷🏼‍♀️

I put my son's in hot chocolate

Adatwistscientist · 06/02/2022 14:26

I'd say if it's chronic then it's likely to be a non-ige allergy. Dairy is the most likely culprit.

Vicky1989x · 06/02/2022 14:27

@strawberrycheesecake1989 Yeah, I’m still debating whether or not she’s slightly dairy intolerant. She had reflux and only came off gaviscon 1.5 months ago and I thought her constipation would clear up but it hasn’t. Her reflux is gone though and only symptom is constipation.. maybe I’ll take her back to the GP.

Great news. I've also used smoothies and a cup with a straw seems to encourage drinking too.

Choconuttolata · 06/02/2022 14:33

Can add in smoothies, jelly, fruit juice ice lollies, yoghurt, ice cream, peanut butter, fruit shoots. So long as she drinks lots of water with it.

Could you try her on ducalux/lactulose? You have to say it's for you as the chemist won't give it to a child but it will do not harm. (Been advised this by GP). The taste might be preferable. My little one takes it no problem.

Rosetintedglasses666 · 06/02/2022 15:24

My ds is same age. He gets prescribed lactulose. It is sweet so doesnt taste bad however i put it in his milk to disguise it.
Ive tried to give him well baby vitiam disguised in drinks but he hates that.
Maybe you could look in to lactulose?
Its so horrible seeing them constipated.

Adatwistscientist · 06/02/2022 15:33

It sounds like your masking the problem with the meds. I'd cut out dairy for a few weeks instead.

Vicky1989x · 06/02/2022 22:17

Thank you all for the advice, will definitely try some of the tips!

Lactulose used to give her a bellyache hence the switch to movicol. I’m going to take her back to the GP though, see if I can push for allergy testing.
