85% Childcare Universal Credit??

I am looking to get back into work after DS2, I have been out of work now for nearly 3 years after being made redundant after maternity leave then falling pregnant with DS2.

I have been looking for part time evening work as that seems the only viable option for our family but would love to just get back into full time to reduce the gap in working. I hate not contributing financially and whilst I know that my role is important, being a SAHM, I don’t feel like I’m doing the best for our family.

I’ve been reading that universal credit can help with childcare costs, we currently receive a top up with my DH wages. Has anyone gone back to work full time alongside their partner working full time and received this help? Financially it would not be doable to work full time without this, we wouldn’t even be able to cover bills if we had to pay for two lots of childcare.

I know it was our choice to have two children, (even if one was an “accident” aha) and understand the financial stresses are essentially our own doing so apologise if me asking about UC help offends or annoys anybody it is not my intentions. I know a lot of family just have to struggle.

I just want to do better for our family and feel a little stuck right now!

Thanks!! X

Hi OP,

UC is different for everyone as each person has different entitlements. I wouldn't recommend using a calculator as they're notoriously inaccurate. Instead I would do a manual calculation to work out if you would be better off and how much help you would get.
There's a great FB group which will help you with this - Universal Credit and Legacy Benefit Advice.
Hope that helps.
