DS2 (7 weeks) is developing cradle cap and has very peely skin on his face (not excema just dry n peely). Suggestions range from olive oil to nothing with various branded lotions and potions in between. With DS1 I left his cradle cap alone and it lasted for months.
I was wondering what you guys used (if anything) especially as the peely skin is on his face
thanks
phee

I used Dentinox on cradle cap - friend was using olive oil and her DB smelt like a salad all the time.

What else are you using on him? You can bath in plain water and not use any creams at all.

Pheebe · 30/12/2007 16:32

hi hunker, i'm not using anything at the mo just washing with plain water as its on his face but dh thinks we should be putting something on it.

strangely his body is as smooth as a babies butt

ROFL at smelling like a salad - I was advised by my HV to use olive oil on a little dry patch on DS's head. It does smell a bit odd, but it does work!

Pheebe · 30/12/2007 16:33

can u use any olive oil or does it have to be the stuff from the pharmacy?

Almond oil on head, unless nut allergies in family.

Diprobase or aqueous cream on face.

Are you washing everything in the same detergent/fabric softener?

DaisyMoo · 30/12/2007 16:35

I used aqueous cream for dry skin. You can also use it in the bath. Think I had some dentinox for cradle cap as I just couldn't face the olive oil.

juuule · 30/12/2007 16:35

I used olive oil for cradle cap. I can't remember mine smelling at all. Washed it off next morning and combed hair/head gently with nit comb. Although at 7weeks you could probably skip the comb bit.
Used thin layer of vaseline on dry skin. Applied it straight after bath.
I did put a small squirt of baby bath into the bath water when I bathed them so that anything oily or greasy would be removed.

hunkermunker · 30/12/2007 16:37

I really liked Dentinox shampoo - boys heads smelt of roses which was lovely.

DS2 has only ever been bathed in plain water - no soap at all on his skin - and he has the softest skin imaginable, even at nearly two. DS1 had Simple stuff and has dry skin and eczema. So from a sample of two, I'd go for nowt at all I use Aveeno on DS1 now though.

Pheebe · 30/12/2007 16:43

wanderingtrolley I did wonder about the washing powder we use but the skin on his bod is as smooth as anything so don't think its that. I think its the weather actually as we've been out and about alot recently

I used olive oil too, but then I used to use it for baby massage as well cos the lady that taught me it said that it was really good for the skin.

VictorianSqualor · 30/12/2007 16:45

It was just normal extra virgin olive oil from tesco btw.

Olive oil.

Washersaurus · 30/12/2007 20:52

I've used bm on DS2's dry skin on his face too - seemed to work a treat

We used olive oil (from the kitchen) when DS1 was tiny as he had very dry skin all over.

BlueberryPancake · 30/12/2007 20:55

If you want to spash out or can afford it, you can get organic extra virgin olive oil from a health shop. I used to rub a small amount in the hair mid afternoon, and massage it really well, and wash the hair at bath time in the evening. Did that every couple of days, for a couple of weeks and cradle cap was gone.

As for dry skin, Aqueuous or Diprobase. We use diprobase as the large container comes with a pump and is easier to rub in I think. Its very cheap, you can get it over the counter at pharmacy. I use it on my dry skin and works great!

warm olive oil for us.makes great hand cream too!poor ds cradle cap-or cradle crap as he prounonced it got infected and was horrible, only went last year when he was 5

kindersurprise · 30/12/2007 20:57

I tried olive oil for the cradle crap but had more success with the Dentinox shampoo.

DD had really dry skin and we used this from Weleda. Just a tiny bit, it really helped and she smelt lovely.

She used to stretch up towards my fingertips as I massaged it into her skin, like a cat. The smell of it still makes me smile and brings a tear to my eye.

ScaryHairy · 30/12/2007 20:59

I used Epaderm which you can get over the counter in Boots. It can be used as a soap substitute, so I washed DD's head in it and it got rid of the cradle cap in short order. Normally I use calendula oil on her dry skin which is great and smells good.

Cashncarry · 30/12/2007 21:03

I've said this before on MN and got but DD had the most dreadful cradle cap - it came down to her eyebrows and I tried everything to get rid of it - olive oil, detinox, almond oil, combing etc.

Eventually at 5 months, we shaved her head (were going to do it anyway) and it disappeared never to reappear (she's now 3 yrs old).

Do try it .... if you've got the stomach for it

Chaotica · 30/12/2007 22:30

grapeseed oil (ordinary stuff sold in tesco's etc) works like olive oil and doesn't smell like salad...
